4.6 liter V8 Replace or Rebuild

I have 2001 F150 with a 4.6 l V8. The vin code is 1FTRX17W11KF65124.

I think my engines crankshaft or bearings are messed up and the people i've talked to have told me thats its going to cost more to fix those things that it would to swap engines. Is that true, would it cost alot to get it overhauled/rebuilt? The truck has 66K miles on it.

I'm out of the Chicago land area and I wanted to know where I could find a cheap engine? I'm looking to spend under $1000 dollars on it. So any help would be appreciated. Also I wanted to know how hard it would be to swap it out on your own in a garage? Should I even bother trying? I've done some mechanical work but notthing this complex.

1- what makes you think the bearings are gone? what did you do to try and diagnose this? mileage?
2- it would be cheaper to replace it with a used engine. you could get a good used engine with low miles for a decent price. i would do a 5.4 swap. just pick any 99-03(and 04 heritage edition) 5.4 2v and get a custom tune for it. if you want to keep the 4.6 then get any 2001- 2003 4.6 2v(i think 04+may bolt in without mods too but not 100% sure). i think the mustangs got pi heads in 99 so if you pull it out of a mustang then 99-04 4.6 2v will work without any modifications or tuning required just remember to use the truck intake. do you want more power? or just a engine that runs good? its not that hard to replace the engine. just time consuming and if people bother you while your swapping it it can get annoying. other than that its not that bad.
