Things to check for 2001 5.4L

Hello everyone, I'm new here, just bought an '01 F150 XLT S/C 2wd 7700.
There were no dummy lights on, and it drove nice, but that buzzing on the passenger side was a bit of a worry. But after 5 mins of reading here I found it's the pcv valve (playing around last night the buzzing changed when touching/moving the pcv valve so I'm pretty sure that's the prob) I got the truck for $2850 + gst (Canadian) with 180,000km.
the truck has some paint issues, cracking etc.
but is otherwise great!

are there any other things I should look out for in an F150 with the 5.4L and this age/kms?
I'm going to change the fluids, filters and plugs, check the brakes. Anything else?

With plugs make sure you do COPs as well.. Look on ebay for COPs from Global or Uneek.. Search for dg508 on Ebay..

With the PCV valve, make sure you get motorcraft and you might as well do it sooner rather than later to save some hassle.. It's a super cheap product (Motorcraft PCV from my local dealer was like $9 USD.... Also check the PCV elbow and make sure it isn't cracked/failing. They fail a lot apparently.

Lastly, you may want to take on removing the throttle body and elbow and giving it a good cleaning, along with the MAF.

Raithan said it all, - good post!!

Yea, those third party replacement PCV valves don't work very well. The Margins are way to tight and she can't breath and they can get pretty noisy. A Motorcraft PCV valve is a must.

Ford has a TSB about the paint cracking. You might be able to find that thru search.

would you happen to be able to convert that into miles? and jbrew and raithen basically said it all. make sure to use motorcraft plugs(torque to 28 ftlbs) and dielectric grease inside the cop boots, other than that it sounds like its a great deal.

How's the suspension look, lower ball joints ect? Ball joints and tie rods are a common wear item on any F150.

Thanks for all the tips, I did a once over today, and couldn't find much wrong. Brakes are new, tires are new, spare has never been used.... however it is an 8 year old spare, more sure how long tires last in general. There was a service done 3000km ago, so the fluids are good for a awhile. PCV valve solved the buzzing noise and I got an air filter and wipers because those are the only things I could find that could use replacing.

I'll have a closer look at the ball joints etc. But this one drives alot better than a '99 I test drove which had "loose" steering and front end feel, but that doesn't mean this one might be close to needing something up front. Plugs were changed recently but I don't know if they did COP's.

Great forum, thanks everyone

As for the conversions it works out to be about 112,500 miles and just over $2500US

Sometimes they make a buzzing noise after shut down. Don't confuse this with the PCV, that buzzing is normal if you ever here it. Comes from the EVR and it's just vacuum bleeding off. Completely normal.

Look at the side-walls of the spare, if the side-walls are cracked and weathered looking,-that's a sign the tires on it's way out.

My oil pump quit at 189,000, engine locked up, even with regular oil changes, but I don't think this a common problem and I would buy another anyway.
