Carbon Problem

Hello, please help this newby

I have a 2002 F150 Super Crew. 4.6L V8. a few years ago I got an Check Engine light. This guy who did repairs on my car said it was a EGR light. HE said it was not the EGR but carbon buildup and needed to be clean. He said he could change several things but cleaning is all it needed.

He cleaned it and it was fine for a year or so. It came on again, I went to Auto Zone they checked it and the guy said it was the same thing. He reset it and it did not come back on. Now a few weeks ago I got the same light, my guy no longer lives in the Ville. So I had it checked at Auto zone and they said same thing. The guy told me the F150 was notorious for Carbon Build up. Said I should use RXP Gas Kicker (Engine De-Carbonator) and then also add Lucas injector Cleaner. Well now it idles real rough at times. Light still on.

I did see my guy off the plastic cover and Clean with carb cleaner. I am fairly mechanically inclined is it hard to do? Is this the thing to do or is there something else I need to do?

Also I was told that Auto Zone will not reset the light anymore. Will it go off on its own or if I undo the battery will it reset?

thanks for all of the help.

What was the code # that would help to know also your mechanic friend probably cleaned the throttle body and elbo. You can use the search function and find alot of info on just this subject. There are ports for the egr on the elbo that get carboned up. I found this post so check it out but I'd be willing to bet cleaning it will solve your problem. Give us the code that will help get more responses.

According to the MSDS I found on the net, the gas additive you used is nothing more than fuel oil........100% per MSDS. That ain't gonna clean anything in yer engine. You might try a can of BG44. It's a Stoddard Solvent cleaner which is the best for a multipoint injection system. You can probably find it at a local NAPA store. I wouldn't bet the farm that it will cure your issues but it will clean the internals pretty quick. Best course of action is disassembly and clean. Make sure you are using a quality Top Tier gasoline. Buying cheap gas is the quickest way to carbon one of these Tritons up.
