Exclamation is this to high mileage

i have a couple of friends that tell me that 173,000 miles on my 2001 5.4 4x4 f150 is to high and i will have to replace the orginal motor and transmission.
one of my friends says that the bucking and loud straining noise when i shift from R to D is this is a problem or not.
Any comments/ suggestions are greatly appriciated.

i dont understand the straining noise part... but the mileage isnt really that bad. my 4.6 had 196k on it and the trans, i just wanted more power so i dropped it.
