OOOOOOOOOHHH.. "You need to start over, let me know when/if your ready." is under a solid line..

I thought that was your sig or something. Didn't know that was meant for me.

I'm going to clean the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner tonight. Maybe it has thrown a MAF code and I haven't caught it yet.

Any idea's on how to tell which DPFE is factory (alluminum or plastic)?
Does the reasoning about why I think the DPFE may be the culprit sound reasonable?

I'll definately watch the EGR Valve now that I may have jacked it up.

Call the dealership and get a part # - Know your build date. The 2001 4six looks like this-

This is a DEALERSHIP part ONLY. Get the Motorcraft.

Looks like you have the 2002 5.4L DPFE lol. You need to run the right one, they have different voltage outputs.

Watchin you EGR valve won't help a thing. Test the diaphragm , it only takes a few minutes and you do this while the engines running. This tests your ports and valve operation. You don't dismantle.

BTW, this is my sig -

and don't ruin your MAF - ASK!! Remember, -that's most likley your shifting problem. It can't have the least little bit of oil on it.

Check your O2 sensors bro i had the same thing happen to mine with a similar code. O2 sensors were gunked up replaced em and bam no more code. Some people look past this but its a legit engine code coming from the O2 sensors which pull up an egr related code. try it bro sensors are like 2 bucks a piece, and dont forget u have pre and post cat sensors so get 4

Oh brother

The only way a 401 could be caused by an O2 sensor is if the bung was leaking on the forwards. Other than that - No relation.

Yea, you should run OEM Bosch or Motorcrafts and their not cheap. I ran BW's before and went down to 9 mpg highway - You don't want to mess with this system.

There are only 2 things you should use to clean a MAF - MAF cleaner or non-residue electrical parts cleaner.

Yes, there were 2 different 4.6's - Windsor and Romeo. The one you have will be in the VIN code.

These are the only things I use -

Unless the MAF has a hard shell coating cooked on it, -that happens from lack of maintenance. I break out the Lacquer thinner to CARFULY cut it loose.

Other than that I use Windex lol.

Other dedicated and electrical cleaners work as well, you just have to buff off the residue. That's if you want it spotless.

The DPFE pictured looks like the "bolt-on" type. My 2001 4.6 (build date Aug 2000) uses the other kind, similar what the OP has pictured

When I replaced mine, I had to learn the hard way to use the Motorcraft part. (Tried a NAPA first...coupla months later the light was back.)

Hey Guys,, UPDATE:
(First let me say thanks for all your posts)

Ok. Yesterday I stopped by Autozone and had them read the code again before doing anything. It then had a TPS Low Voltage error, No other code was showing up.
I went ahead and got another TPS (since I bought one in Dec 2007 and it was still under warranty, so it was free) and replaced it.
I also bought some MAF cleaner and cleaned the MAF sensor like the "How To" link on here. I had the Neg off of the battery the whole time so it cleared the code. Hooked everything back up..

Took the truck for a spin (about 30 miles) last night, and BANG everything seemed great. Shifting right, power was back, no CEL light...

This morning I'm driving to work and the CEL comes on again. But everything is still running smooth. Stopped by Autozone, and its a 0401, Insufficient EGR Flow again.

Can someone point me to (I did a search, but to no avail) on the correct way to test the EGR valve? I am going to order the correct DPFE for this truck, but would like to replace the EGR if its bad/getting stuck.
I need to go get a vacum pump to test the EGR itself right?

Is the build date the date on the sticker on the inside drivers door? It says: Date 01/01

you can just use a piece of hose or a straw and place it where the vacuum line hooks to the egr valve. then just suck on it and if it idles worst then the valve is working like it should. if it doesnt change then your either not sucking hard enough or its no good. for the p0401- let us know if the new dpfe fixes that or not.

edit: i know the sucking part didnt sound right but it was the only way i could explain it.- just figured i'd say that before someone else does

At this point replacing the DPFE with one from the dealer is the best way to go and if that doen't solve the code and the EGR passes the suck test then it could be the ports are restricted. You may need to clean the throttle body and elbow. Check this post.
