Running rough

I have a 1997 ford f150 w/5.4L engine 147,000 miles. It started running rough yesterday & then check engine light came on. About 1 mile from home the check engine light started blinking. Checked the codes & i found these three at the same time.
P0102-MAF or VAF a circuit low input
P0301-Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0113-IAT sensor 1 circuit high input

Can anyone get me pointed in the right direction ?

I have no converters on the truck (simulators) about 4 years now

Spark plugs was changed 2 years ago

Check your connections, but I could suggest the obvious and say check the COP and the plug on that cylinder physically. Possibly use some Sensor Safe MAF cleaner and give it a shot(the maf and the IAT) if it looks bad (doesn't hurt to pull it out and give it a good shot, just watch the small wires inside it). Check your air filter too, could be either over oiled or too dirty restricting flow. Just a start for ya until the seasoned vet's get ahold of you Good luck.

what brand plugs did you use? and how many miles ago? did you use dielectric grease inside the coil boots

and yea check connections to the sensors and clean the maf. if that doesnt help then check the input voltage to each(should be around a 5v reference) and then check the output/signal voltage from the sensor.

Wouldn't hurt to change plug wires (use OEM) if you've never done that.

Have you recently had your intake tube off or disconnected recently.
The reason for asking, If it was started up or possibly even the ignition turned on, the MAF and IAT codes could have surfaced then. As far as the MIL light flashing, that is indicating a misfire. What I would recommend is swapping that coil pack from cylinder #1 to cylinder #2, disconnect your battery to clear the keep alive memory, and drive it again. When that light starts flashing again, visit your code reader of choice and see if the code P0302 (indicating misfire on cylinder #2) comes up. If it does, you have isolated your fault to the coil pack. If it stays the same, you have ruled out the coil and you may want to try another plug. I strongly recommend using Motorcraft plugs in this (and all) engine. Let us know what you find.

Yea, 5.4L's don't use coil packs. They never have. The 4.6L and 4.2L use and have used "Coil Packs". The 5.4L's use dedicated coils = Coil Over Plug (COP) systems, -always have.

Hey ? Do I know you? - If your who I'm thinking of,-that must have been a typo above ?

Like Matt said - No plug wires with this ignition.

a0l3jzz - Matt asked about plugs. What plugs are using in that 97? How many miles? How are you running with NO converters ???? And why? Are you tuned? Doesn't make sense, with the factory tune it would run like crap without converters.

So what have you done ? More info.

Getting there lol!! I took a day off yesterday,-first one.

You know, when I moved in this place, it had one 14 guage 15 amp circuit running to the shop from the house that someone ran out their back in 1957

100 AMP Service w/220 now - Cool neigbors around here, -lucked out, -I've pulled a few all nighters working on the place and I'm not all to quiet lol.

At least you were able to get some hunting in - we have to go fishing

You would love fishing on the back of my property. The trout are running pretty good. My pond gets fed from a lake about 4 miles up the road. The State stocks the lake and a couple areas of the creek. I didn't stock trout this year. I wanted to make sure the beaver were going to stay around and build up my 2 dams, and they are staying so far. 2 yrs ago I put in, 100 3-5 in., 20 8", and 6 14"+. The local college my wife works at has a trout farm as part of the AG program. I got my fishery permit 2 years ago now I'm set for life.
Good talking to you. I have to get outside now and finish putting up the anti-rabbit/deer fence around the wife's garden. Fun Stuff
Fun repair project this weekend on my stepsons ranger.
He has the p0171/p0174 codes and he's due for inspection in a few weeks.
Last Sat. was brakes all around it and the weekend before that was a complete tune-up (plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc.)
Tune-up was definately needed, now I have to locate the problem to get rid of the codes. I really hope it's not the intake, I do not want to do that this weekend.
Stay in touch, I try to get on here a cpl times a week but it's hard to with all the projects going on.

The reason for no converters is the converter that was on it come apart so i didn't want to pay for a new one, i've had the simulators on it for about 5 years now & it has been running fine. I'm not sure what kind of plugs are in it. I carried it & had a mechanic change them. The "new" plugs has about 30,000 miles on them.

grab a 7mm socket and ratchet and pull one of the front coils and pull the spark plug out. see what brand it is and check the gap. most independent shops use aftermarket parts so you more than likely have something other than motorcrafts in it. 30000 miles on the plugs doesnt mean anything. jbrew had 40 miles on a brand new set of autolites when they started misfiring.

Yes the 5.4L since its inception has used a COP design, the "coil packs" that I were referring to were just that, coil over plug "coil packs", which is what most Ford techs call them. I am sorry if you were confused in thinking that I was stating to swap big bulky coils around..

Not to argue with you, but 2 seperate Ford techs that I know at 2 different dealerships refer to the coils on the 5.4L's as COP's and the 4-wire coil connectors as coil paks. My local NAPA and a friend (AJ) who owns his own garage also refer to them as COP's. NAPA & AJ must use the right terminology because they supply and service alot more than Ford vehicles using COP's. Example, Jeep and alot of imports use the Coil Over Plug ignition system.
When I read "coil-paks", I think coils with plug wires. Must be a NY thing .
