Throttle Body Cleaning Tips
Throttle Body Cleaning Tips
I'm gonna be replacing the coils in my rig again this weekend.I was running Globals until they started to miss, now I'm gonna try uneek coils.Anyways, one of the coil holdown bolts on drivers side has lost it's head, allowing the coil to bounce around. So I'm gonna fix it this weekend, and in order to extract it, I need to remove some things, so....I figure nows a good time to clean the throttle body.I'm sure it's never been done, and the truck has 209k kms on it.My manual says to replace the throttle body gasket.Should I? O r will the old one come apart easily? I will need to order any parts in to me, as I am way out in the sticks. So if I need anything special, I'd like to get it before I start. My wife doesn't like to walk......
Who am I kidding?
Neither do I...

i would get a new gasket just in case. its not much at all. it may break and it may not, depends on how brittle it is. you may want to clean the iac and the 90 degree elbow that the tb attaches to while your at it.
Those are all on my list as per this write-up
I'm guessing that once I have the TB/elbow off, I should block off the throat of the intake to keep debris from falling in, and go to town with the carbcleaner and elbow grease. I have a spray can of electrical contact cleaner for cleaning the MAF, says it's for automotive use only. Will it be safe to use? It's from Canadian Tire, in case any canuks can chime in with their experiences.

Funny stuff,
I will be doing it at my place. I don't have a garage, just a gravel driveway.Good for engine work, bad for suspension work. And if the sun don't shine, it don't get fixed.
Thanks for the tips, too,by the way.You are always very well informed and helpful.

wait i just noticed you said carb cleaner in that post. do not use carb cleaner, it can and most likely will melt any plastic that it gets on. there is stuff made specifically for cleaning the throttle body. i used crc throttle body cleaner for my truck. it worked pretty good in my opinion. 3m makes another good tb cleaner.
I will look tomorrow for TB Cleaner. I also read somewhere here that Deep Creep works well to clean tb's. Maybe I'll grab that, too,if I can find it. Any other safe solvents?

Don't use carb cleaner - you'll smoke the O-ring, this one -

What works best IMO -

Every CRC product I used leaves a milky residue , - even MAF cleaner. Honestly, -Windex does a better job. Just ask JMC (he'll tell yuh lol)Pull the MAF to clean it -

BTW - Deep Creep is for the IAC.

So where is the o-ring located that you have pictured? I want to be sure not to damage it. And I'm guessing the Isopropyl Alcohol is for cleaning the MAF?
Thanks for the tips jbrew.

It's about 1" above that greasy looking pine knot in that chunck of timber,- on the MAF pin housing shaft in this pic -

I use Windex on the MAF. What ever you do don't clean the MAF right after turning off the engine. One of the wires is heated and you could snap it with a cold spray. I would have new gaskets handy just in case. If you are getting them at crappy tire you can return them. If you do return them be sure to keep your Canadian tire money with the receipt. Those suckers charge you cash if you don't return them.

When cleaning, don't use a Q-tip. A Q-tip will hook the wires. Use something like a thin red straw, - like you get with a can of WD40. Wrap that in cloth or paper towel. You can get it squeaky clean that way.
Thanks again guys for these tips. Since I'm a bit out in the wilds, the closest Crappy Tire is 2 hrs away(or anything at all, really), the local hardware store and local gas station are supplying the solvents.Everything else I ever need has to come shipped, which is why I always have to plan ahead for any type of work on my rig, making your advise and experiences even more important to me.If I run into an unexpected broken part, my lazy *** will be hiking, and all that huffing and puffing can't be good for anyone.
