Another EGR code 401

First off it's a '97 4.6 and i started working on the problem before i checked here for ideas, so didn't always do things in the right order with the best of parts but I started with replacing the valve, still was throwing the code so I replaced the DPFE (no its not from a dealer and I don't know the brand but its what they had so i took it) and I'm really hoping thats not the problem, but that still didn't help any, i then took the throttle body off and cleaned out the port were the egr hooks up to, and thought it was fixed but the light came back again, then i just replaced the hoses leading to the DPFE and again no help. And finally because I have nothing else I can think of or find on here to do I have the throttle body off again and am cleaning it out even more.

There were a few things mentioned in the other threads in passing that I didn't know exactly what was up with so I figured it was best to just ask what way to go next.

Someone mentioned something about some other part of the intake manifold to clean but I didn't think that that would really be giving the 401 code. So I haven't looked into that yet, but is it more likely one of the other hoses around that area or in the tube that comes up from the exhaust into the EGR valvue? Or something else entirely?

There some way for me to check on the dpfe and make sure its not something else? I really don't want to go out drop another 100 on another DPFE just to find out both the ones i have now are good and its something else.

DPFE4 DPFE15

if one of those is the correct parts number, rockauto has them listed at 38USD and 67USD respectively. plus s/h.

http://www.rockauto.com
go to ford - f150 - 4.6 L - Emission - EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor

Now if only i could find that sort of deal for it locally and not online, as I need to get this fixed asap, need to pass emissions. Worst part bout this whole thing is that the CELight was blown since who knows when and have no clue when it started, never had any problem with performance or anything, just gotta get it past emissions

MOTORCRAFT Part # DPFE4 {Clip Mount #4U7Z9J460AA}
4U7E-9J460AA

$37.79

MOTORCRAFT Part # DPFE15 {Bolt-on Mounting #F77Z9J460AB}
F48E-9J460BB,F77E-9J460AB

$66.79

No pictures, unfortunately. Maybe Brew can help out here. I seem to remember him saying that there is ONE case where it's okay to use a Tomco-branded aftermarket DPFE.

Yea, the aluminum DPFE's from Tomco are good. They sell Genuine replacements.

i think theres something that the 4.6 is bad for ports plugging that could cause the code. i think it was the plenum ports. not totally sure. someone else may know.

yeah cleaned those ports, oh what i meant to say was the hoses seemed to be clean when i looked through and i can put slight vacuum on the egr valve and make the engine sputter and stall out so the egr tube and valve should be good i believe from what i have read

that means the valve is good. but if there is enough carbon buildup in the tube to restrict the flow then it could still have enough flow to make the engine quit running. if i remember correctly, there is an orifice in the tube that causes the pressure difference for the sensor. which if plugged/restricted could cause the code. the dpfe measures before and after the orifice so its definately worth looking at.
