E-Fans Electrical Meltdown #5

That's right folks, I just had my fifth electrical meltdown on my e-fans!! Another fuse holder completely dissintegrated. If you guys remember some of my past posts on the subject, all of my electrical problems have been with just one of the two fan/controllers. Well this time, it was the other one. My high temp fan/controller/wiring has not been touched since installation some four plus years ago and now out of the blue, the fuse holder has a total meltdown right at the holder itself. It was too destroyed to determine on which side of the holder the meltdown started on, but I think it was the batt side. I've about had it with these things!! I'd go back to my mechanical fan today if I still had the darn thing. The loss in dependancy does not offset the gain in performance any longer. At a minimum I need to replace EVERYTHING but the fans themselves!! Even though I think I'm in the minority, Good luck to all you guys with fans.

Dumb question, but have you thought of a FAL-270 controller on it ?

Dad's RV we went dual FAL-270 controllers, and set the on temp the same on both ( FAL turns on at 60%, then 100% after a 10* F temp rise ).

The controllers in my old 2001 finally took a powder, and it failed to close so the fans ran all the time at 100%. The controller has been changed since I did mine back in 02/03.

nice thing about using the FAL controller on the 38' Itasca is the same spare he has for the F-150 is the same spare for the RV.

I keep looking at doing E-Fans on my '06, just don't have the time right now.

Well that just sucks. I cannot remember which controller that you are using. Is it the Troyer kit? I have the old shroud and fan from my 4.6 if you are interested. They are collecting dust in the basement........

Don't mind me, I'm just motoring along, almost 300,000 miles between two trucks with a mechanical cooling fan.

Well... If you wanted to be like everyone else, you could do that.

There is nothing wrong with conforming, come to the dark side

I had a melted fuse holder and once was enough for me. I like this one a lot.

thats super expensive, but nifty. I will be developing my own fully automated setup after some more R&D time

I payed a little less for mine as it was a while back, and an earlier version. I had trouble with controllers too which were not that cheap to replace. The melted fuse holder was just too scarey. Mad sells a nice one also.

I wonder if a Maxi or a Mega Fuse would solve the melting issues. While a 40 amp fuse is sufficient to not blow under load maybe there is not enough surface area to carry the current across the contacts.

I found a 40 amp circuit breaker from autozone i used on scott's fans. He's had issues with the fans he got, but all the wiring has been flawless.

Yea, it's scary that the stupid thing would burn up like that and never blow the fuse. I'm gonna completely strip out the entire electrical system on those and start from scratch...including a different brand of controllers.

Flex-A-Lite has a neat automatic controller but it looks like it will only run one fan. Not bad but for $97, a little steep to have to buy two. If that'll work with two fans I may give it a try. Anyone know anything about those? I'll post up a link later on that.

I know most of you probably like the idea of two independant controllers in case one goes out, but one controller is also 1/2 the work and 1/2 the fear. And so what if both fans turn on at the same time??

The FAL Part# 31165-VSC is the controller from the FAL-270 kit, made to run 2 fans.

Don't know which one you looked at, but Amazon has them for 97.95 each with free shipping.
http://www.amazon.com/Flex-lite-3116...8298609&sr=8-1

If you don't care about the controller redundancy ( one of the selling points on the TP kit ) then you would only need one VSC for both fans.

If you install 2, you would set on the on temp on both VSCs at the same point. The FAL uses a 60% / 100% fan speed method for cooling.
The FAL-270 is the 1st step is both fans at 60% speed, and if the temp raises another 10*F then they run at 100%.

If you have 2, and set them both the same, it would act like a single unit, but redundant.

Directions on the VSC install

Also FAL had the fuse recall some time ago, and went with set screw Maxi fuses on the harness. JMC posted this in a thread about 5 or 6 years ago, so they already made the switch to a large fuse surface area.

Hey sscully, that's the one. I guess it will handle both fans. Only thing I dislike about it is the lack of two separate sets of wires from the controller for each fan, which means splicing them together. Not a huge deal I guess.

And yes, I did mean to say THANK YOU to you guys that offered up the mechanical fans!!!!!!!!!!
