tappets

I have 2004 F150 with a 5.4 3v when I start it when it's cold a hear a rattle noise for about 2 seconds then it goon away. It pulls good but when it is hot you can hear top end noise and it sounds like tappets. I have looked on the Net but can not find how to set then. I have had the truck since it had 10,000 miles and it had a little noise, I now have 35,000 on it and it is louder. Has any one had this problem or heard of something like it?

He's right about the filter. Cheap aftermarket filters don't have the drain back valves in them, and aren't recommended by Ford. Most likely the problem is the cam phasers. I put a set in yesterday at work, and have to put another set in this weekend on the side.

I had my cam phasers and lash adjusters done a week ago but I am still getting a 1-3 second rattle on cold start up until oil pressure gets up was done at a ford shop as I had the extended warranty do u think they missed something or do u have any ideas for me other than that engine is much quieter when hot Thanx for any info. I use nothing but 5/20 syn blend and ford filter.

did it have the noise before the cam phasers were done? sounds like you have a defective filter or something.

Sorry for being away so long I was sledding but I am back now. I run Pennzoil 5/20 and the filter is a Pennzoil PZ42. Like I said before the noise is load after it warms up as well. If it is cam phasers I will need a how to and a cost for parts.

tomorrow morning when you get in it, just push the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank it a few seconds(should not start). then let the pedal up and then start it. if it still has the noise then i'd say you need a different filter. i'm not sure if the pennzoil has the anti drainback valve in them or not. i'm not sure about the pennzoil either. i've heard nothing but sludging problems back home but i've never heard anything bad about it on here. so i'm not so sure, just try priming the oil before you start it in the morning and see what happens.

That filter is a Fram. It is the exact same design as the Fram Extra Guard filter and it is junk. On the up side, it costs $1 less than the Fram version lol.

Motorcraft FL-820S. Advance has them in stock. Less than four bucks. By the way, do you know that it is a 7 quart oil change? Gotta check.

The noise is not there every time i start it cold so I just went to the ford dealer bought a filter and put it in. I don't think that will help with the tappet noise I get after it is warmed up.

Right, damage is already done - should of read your manual, they give you a book in the glove box, PLUS- they even put a large sticker under the hood. If you didn't pay attention.... Well...

The Sticker -

Hopefully, all you are hearing are the cam phasers. If that's what it is, don't sweat it, it costs way too much to fix and it's not hurting anything, it's just annoying.
