ticking

I have a 2001 5.4, truck runs good but when it warmed up the shut off for about 15min or so then restarted there is a charting sound then while driving for arourd one min there is a slight tick. Is this normal. Its done it since I owned it at 90,000mile and has 105,000 on it now.

Run it until it blows up. Is it drivers side or pass side?

To be safe, I'd check to make sure none of the spark plugs are loose and backing out.

Checked all pluggs and they are tight. could it be from running cai, exhaust, and 93 octane gas with out a tune?

Piston slap is not uncommon just an annoyance. 5.4's will last for hunsreds of thousands of miles with it my kid thinks my truck has it but I cant hear it(deaf...) Dont worry about it to much.

Had similar tick. Found out two days ago that it was a loose plug (after it blew out). Now I'm looking to for a replacement motor, since the blow out stripped the threads in the head. Make sure that your plugs are tight. Will save a lot of $ and trouble in the long run.

Why not get a timesert installed? I've had a plug blow out in my van dealer fixed it and I havent had a problem with it since and that was 5 years ago.

if the plugs are coming out then torque them to 28 ftlbs. that'll keep it from happening again. actually its a good idea to torque them to 28 either way just so it doesnt happen at all.

I think you mean "Re-torqueing" them, you cant torque something that tight already and expect it to be torque at that specific ft, lbs. Sure the plugs might be in there say 15- 20 pounds, but it might take over 50 ft lbs to move em. In short, break the plugs loose, then torque

Also check the rearmost exhaust studs. The studs heads pop off and create a exhaust leak (tick) till the engine warms up.
