Finally changed the plugs in my 04

I have been on and off the fence about doing this for some time now. Well I hit 99,000 miles last week and decided it was time to go ahead. I picked up the updated plugs and the fancy spark plug socket from the stealership, and fabricated a rotunda tool like the one I found on this site. I pulled the coil packs last night and sprayed Aero Kroil onto all plugs. This morning I broke them loose 1 at a time with a breaker bar only turning them about a 1/4 turn, sprayed more Aero Kroil on the plugs and waited 5 minutes. I then used a 3/8 ratchet and worked them back and forth just going by feel. A few were easy, most were hard. They would turn a tiny bit and then get tight, so I would back it off a bit and then try again. I repeated this process for the entire plug each time. Not one broke. After 4 hours I had installed new plugs, had the coil packs installed, and was off for a test drive.

My advice to anyone looking to try this themselves, take it SLOW and keep the plug socket and extension straight! Do not rush. You may only get a 1/8 turn and then catch resistance. Back it off slowly and try again. Just keep it slow and straight.

Thanks to everyone on this site who has contributed useful information regarding this process.

That is the exact one I had built for myself. Sorry for the confusion.

This whole fiasco makes me glad that I bought a "low performance" 2 valve 4.6l F-150.

4 hours? Damn, I was expecting this to be a whole weekend project. It probably would have been if you broke some plugs. Sounds like patience is the key though.

Guys, I have an 08 4.6. do i or should I expect problems with a spark plug change. Also, this is my first Mod Motor as I am a pushrod Mustang owner so any help is greatly appreciated.

how much are the plugs as well. I mean for the car I can spend 15 bucks on plugs and do change them every track day so less than a few thousand miles on them but with higher leaded fuel and nitrous i want good performance.
