Spits and Sputters

Ok, after reading pages of threads, I need ya'lls opinions. My truck runs fine under normal acceleration, but when I hammer on the throttle, it spits and sputters for about 2 seconds then clears up. It sounds about the same as when you get water in the distributor cap. I don't have any engine codes showing up. I have on 06 5.4L with 60K miles with stock plugs still. From what i've read, I am going to start with the fuel filter and go from there. Other than the filter, plugs, and coils, what else could this be? Thanks for your help.

You are doing things in the proper order. Do the filter 1st and see what happens. Jbrew has mentioned in the past that your year truck may have had fuel injector problems as well. Hopefully he will see this and give you more info on that subject. It would appear to me that if you were having an injector problem a code would come up tho.

Yea , I see - Another dang 3valve problem

Well, time to bite the bullet and change those plugs - check the injectors while doing so.

Brew, you might as well type up your "test injector" proceedure so you can do a quick copy and paste or have them open a link. This seems to be coming up more often lately.

PS: during your FI proceedure check, more costly but new shop rags or "rags in a bag" from Lowes would be better than using paper, you think - or not?
I don't like the idea of gas soaked paper around my engine. Catches on fire easier when my ashes fall on the paper. Just kidding about the smoking part but serious about paper products w/ gas around the engine. Rags seem to soak up more and contain it more.

I can't find where I posted that ? You want me to write that up again? Mannnnn... I was going to wait until he asked before going thru the trouble..

For rags - you can clean out your tea shirt and sock drawers, then go get yuh some new under wears for yourself !!

That's what I do anyway :o

Found it -

Some things you can do to pin-point the problem - Since you mentioned something about wanting to do the plugs yourself, here's the first thing I would check without a doubt if I had your problem. -

Injectors -

Disconnect battery/Pull the fuel rail only, leave fuel lines connected/Lay rags down around coils and bottom of injectors/Pull injectors from head/disconnect power source (connector)/ insert injectors to rail/With rags, clean up any residual fuel that may have leaked, get rid of the rags/ Lay a fresh set of rags down /Connect battery/ turn key to run and pressurize fuel rail/ inspect injectors for leakage.

Any leaks ? Yes/ -Replace injectors. Their flooding the cylinders, -Fouling the plugs.

The 05's had a bad batch of injectors. They are seeing this problem in allot of 06's now.

Ford increased the injector warranty to 100,000 miles for the 05 models. As far as I know, they haven't for the 06 , but most likely will in the future.

Do you own fuel system diagnostics. You need to have on hand - Pressure gauge/ at least a Haynes , Chiltons service manual. These manuals will have your pressure #'s and procedure. Before testing further, you must change fuel filter.

Here's a tree of general diagnostics (not vehicle specific). Specific tests not outlined, I posted above -

Everything good? YES. -

Inspect plugs/coils/boots - look for water in plug chambers.

BTW - WeaponX if you need coils. - http://www.rpmoutlet.com/musv8wgf.htm

I copied this to my "Ford auto repair folder".

Don't worry, you will get the credit if I have to post it.

By the way, under wear, whats that?

Ye, I have a box in my shop where we all throw the old T's and socks in. I better not see a pair of underwear in there either.
Couldn't soak up much with the Wife's anyway.
Her boulder holders maybe
She would kill me if she got her hands on this.

Boulder Holders ? .. Whhaatttt!! - Too funny.

Okay that's "underwears" - Def = T-Shirts and Socks.

Your thinking of "shorts" I think ? I wasn't. I think you have boulder holders on the brain at this point.

Changed the fuel filter and problem fixed. Thank goodness it was an easy one. I don't need to reset my computer for this one do I?

It definately wouldn't hurt anything, especially if you had running problems before the change. With changing the fuel filter, you changed the dynamics of how your engine will run from how it was running. If you don't own a scantool to perform a DTC erase then you can disconnect the battery for a 1/2 hr and that will reset your PCM parameter's for you. If it was my truck, I would do it. I own a scantool so it would be done in seconds.
Good luck with the truck, glad everything worked out for you.

By the way, you are at 60,000 miles and I have read you are at the right mileage to have the plugs changed. I guess it is alot easier to do it now.
Read up on it on this forum. There has been alot of threads and posts discussing this subject. Keep in mind what Jbrew has said about the 05 & 06 injector problems as well.
Just a couple of ideas in case you plan on keeping this truck for awhile.

I know but I keep putting it off because I don't want to deal with it. I know the longer I wait, the worse it will be. I just need to nut up and do it.
