5.4 swap 2v sohc to 4v dohc

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I have read post after post regarding mod engine swaps and have a few questions. I have a 97 f150 4x4 w/ a factory 5.4 2v sohc and code “E” trans (I believe is a 4r100/E40D). I recently acquired a brand new 5.4 4v dohc navi motor complete with intake, TB, coils, harness, fuel rail, injectors, ps pump etc.

I would like to swap the 2v for the 4v and have so far identified the following issues that would need to be addressed:

1. exhaust – I would prefer to find a set of LT headers but may be limited to factory cast manifolds or shorties. I believe the 4v exhaust port shape is specific to the head. Anyone know where to find LT’s for a 5.4 dohc on an f-150?
2. wiring harness – should I use the 2v harness or the 4v harness? A pcm from the 2v sohc or from the 4v dohc?
3. fuel system – the 4v dohc has a return type system fuel rail. I don’t think this will be an issue. May have to refab fuel lines. The ports are in a different location on the 4v dohc rail than the 2v sohc rail. Will the 2v rail work on the 4v motor?
4. Can PATS be disabled in the new tune if a navi pcm is required?
5. Is a new Torque Converter necessary or required?
6. Throttle and cruise cables need to be replaced.

Am I missing anything? I believe the mechanical portion of the swap is straight forward. I would appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer. Positive or negative. Thanks in advance for your time.

Everything was included with the engine. I bought it from a private seller.

this comes up all the time:

#1: use the PCM for your transmission

#2: use the torque converter and flywheel for your current transmission

#3: NO LONG TUBE HEADERS ARE AVAILABLE that I know of (but you can get custom ones made)

two valve ones bolt right up, just have to “port the flange”

#4: use the 4 valve fuel rails and wiring harness (the harness will plug into the spot your 2 valve will unplug from) fuel lines are a direct plug in

#5: use your F-150 oilpan (the navigator one may not clear)

#6: you should be fine on the cruise and throttle cables

good luck and please take lots of pictures as I'd like to do a write up to get posted

Terajerame,

Thanks for the response. I was hoping you would reply. I fully intend on keeping notes and taking pics. I would also like to see a writeup on this swap with more specifics. Thanks for the input.

This is stage one of the project. Stage two would consist of some sort of power adder. Any suggestions? I dont know of any intake maifolds that would support a blower. I maybe limited to a side mount "procharger" style blower.

I noticed in another post you mentioned something about upgrading the injectors. Do you know what size is stock for the navi motor and what size should I upgrade to?

Thanks for your time. Its appreciated.

centrufigal superchargers would be easier and the factory navigator intake manifold is the best performer on the street when it comes to torque

if you want an aftermarket intake manifold you need to look into the sullivan performance 5.4 dohc intake manifold and TB adapter (but it'll knock some of your low end power out but 4500rpms on is a different story)

also there are several 32 valve 5.4 trucks running positive displacement superchargers (using a modified terminator cobra manifold)

if you keep notes and take some pics I'll do the write up if you'd like

Thanks for the response. I am looking forward to getting started and passing on sme good info.

A question has come up today regarding the crank. Did some navi motors come with a 6bolt crank and others with an 8 bolt? I assume the 6 is a cast crank is the 8 a forged or can it be either? Can anyone elaborate?

Thanks

throttle and cruise cables do not have to be replaced. He will need to use parts of the both two valve and four valve harnesses. You will need to use the stock torque converter. 4 valve heads have a special exhaust port on them. Two valve headers will not work. You will probably not need a navigator PCM. Just take it to a reputable tuner and they can fix it up. You will need to rewire the navigator harness to work with the stock computer. You also need to modify the existing four valve intake manifold, or get a small aftermarket one. I swapped one into my 2001 F-250. I don't know about Pat's, my truck didn't have it. Don't bother with fancy headers, you won't be able to fit long tubes, and short tubes don't gain you that much power.

well thanks for bumping this thread, and also thanks for the false information that you blasted

two valve long tubes DO bolt right up

The throttle and cruise control cables I have not verified

however I have verified that the oil pan will interchange

I have also verified the engine harness is a direct olug-N-play

the navigator intake manifold is the best performing one under 4500rpms (just use a hobbs switch for the imrc control)

They do but they won't work.

Hey guys, I didn't blast any false information. The 2 valve headers DO bolt up. However, the 4v heads have an oval exhaust port. They 2 valve heads have a round exhaust hole. So, if you put 2 valve headers on a 4 valve head, you are restricting your exhaust flow and thus losing horsepower. The throttle cable and cruise control fit on my truck with NO modification. Please do not just plug and play your harness. You will lose several things notably one 02 sensor and head temp sensors (at least for me) also my starter wouldn't spin. I moved around the grounds and switched around some wires in the connector. I spent a long time using a multimeter to trace the wires so I would get it just right.
