Dipstick Question
Dipstick Question
Everytime I change the oil in my '03 5.4, I put in 6 quarts of oil, but the dipstick shows the oil a half quart low. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm reluctant to top it off. I don't want to overfill it.

Same thing with my 2000 4.6. What I learned to do is note the level on the dipstick after running then resting for a few minutes after an oil and filter change. I know I put in the 6 quarts that my owner's manual calls for, so I consider that level (about halfway between the upper and lower marks) to be "full."
If I need to add oil between changes, I never go past that midway point that I observed right after an oil change. I've seen some members suggest scratching a line on the indicator as a way to remember also.

Yea, you don't want to over fill it. The line on the stick is the MAX. On some sticks it may say "safe" or "don't add if between the lines" - Most don't, but it's good practice. Overfilling WILL cause all kinds of problems - Premature wear on the internals, bad economy, blown gaskets and shorten the life of your engine to name some.
