97F150 temp.guage pegged high

Ihave a 97 4.6 engine. My problem is my truck runs normal, engine heats normally, plenty of heat comes out vents when called upon. The dash temp. guage pegs high after 3 minutes of engine running, w/no warning lights. I located two temp. sensors at front of manifold, I replaced the one closest to front of manifold, and now the engine temp. sits cold position all the time. Did I replace the wrong sensor?

One is the ECT for the computer and the other one is the coolant sensor for the gauge. Don't remember which is which, though. Usually the ECT has two wires and the sender has one.

Having same problem. I can spot the sensor for the guage, but where is the one for the ECT? Pics would be a godsend. Also, how does the harness for the temp guage disconnect? The plastic connector is facing the rear of the engine, and for the life of me I can't see how it connects. Again, pics would be great.

Thanks,

Jim

So which engine are you referring to? Both have different set ups. One doesn't have an ECT. So I guess your referring to the 97?

Just flip the connector around and plug it in, click. Easy shmeasy.

Sorry to be so dumb, but how do you "flip the connector around?"

To clarify (?), I can't figure out how to "unlock" or remove the wiring connector from the sender.

Your trying to disconnect ? It's similar to a coil disconnect, well sort of. It's a push tab. It shouldn't be spun around like that as they're usually facing forward. Never the less, seeing that it is, at it's location you can use an inspection mirror. Look at the connector close to the top, -the push tab is at that location. Since they use weather seal connectors you may have to work it free while pushing the tab inward.

I have a pick of one somewhere. I'll see if I have it on this hard drive real quick....

Alright, I have some picks from a 98 5.4L, but they are very similar, -if not the same.

Huh, looks like this one is flipped around as well, -

Here's a couple different model types, but they use the same connector type latch, -

Best I can do.

OK, thanks for the info. I could see the little push window, but didn't know what to do with it.

Yea, I know the 4.6L's had two different connecters up front in relation to the coolant system (temp&sender)for quite a few years where the 5.4L's had just the one for 97-98. Just to confirm which sensor you referring to, - I pulled the diagram from the 97 4.6L Ford Service/Workshop Manuel for display. In case you haven't seen it, sensor and SU idents, ~

Section 303-01B: Basic Engine — 4.6L 1997 F-150, F-250 Workshop Manual

IN-VEHICLE REPAIR

BTW- User ONELOWF has some great shots of the same intake within his photo gallery's on this site, if you want to look them up. Great color shots of the set up from what I recall.
