"slapping" niose?

i changed oil yesterday ('97 F150, 4.6, 4X4). At first start up, it made a slight diesel engine "slapping" noise. thought that it was just the oil having been drained at first, but it does it for a couple of minutes every time i start the engine now.
the sound isn't in the engine compartment. it seems under the engine, passenger side. what do as think?

What type of oil filter did you use?

It's possible, I would change the Filter ASAP! Put on another MotorCraft Filter, & if it still makes noise, you obviously have another issue going on with your engine.......

maybe an exhaust leak? it may be leaking at the manifold and after a couple minutes, everything may have expanded enough to seal. just maybe. its worth a look.

My 98 4.6 use to do the same thing!! It was what I call a piston slap!! It had 148000 when I bought it in 02.. I didn't know what brand of oil it had in it, and I always wanted to use a synthetic oil, so I went for the best I could find...Amsoil 10-30 and after a short while (days of regular driving) it stopped and has never returned...I couldn't believe it....I don't know if that would work with everyone but it did exactly what I wanted it to do...Been a Amsoil man ever since!!!

Hey Amsoil man , try using the right weight Amsoil and you may have even better results

Unless you know more than the engineers who designed your motor.

Well she is still running at 207000 miles with little to no oil use, since the change to Amsoil 10-30 the oil consumption decreased and engine rattle is no more!!

Never said that I knew more than the engineers, just figured with all that slack and slapping noise in the engine (with alittle research) that the 10-30 wasn't going to hurt any,,,and let's see...Humm..... It hasn't!!

You must know more than the engineers, they recommend 10-30 for the FFV models only.

For us it's 5 -20. If you know something they don't, please tell me - I want to see 300,000 miles. I'm only @ a quarter million so far. So, I would like to run the right stuff , wheres your data - heres theirs -

This article is being republished in its entirety to update the vehicle models, engines and years affected.
NOTE PLEASE REFER TO THE VEHICLE APPLICATION LIST LATER IN THIS TSB FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS TSB.
ISSUE
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.
ACTION
All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy.
Testing has validated this viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be service with SAE 5W-20.
All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001 Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.

NOTE FOR 1993 THROUGH 1998 MODEL YEAR FFV USE XO-10W30-FFV.

We are 98 and in the list. I'll post the whole list if you like, just ask.

Thanx

I know that they reccomend 5-20, I never said that they didn't. I see that you have all their info..

I'm not the only guy who runs 10-30..Some that I have just read run 15w-30 with awhole lot less miles than I have..I've never ran 5-20 on any Ford that I have ever owned or and other make that I have owned...It is a personal opinion on the 10-30 Amsoil..

Your very intelligent on Ford's their specs and knowledge... I appreciate that

This has worked well for me alot of years now...

Maybe i'm stubborn, (wife says hardheaded)..Its just me..

If I have engine failure due to the wrong weight of oil...You will be the first here that I will tell...

I also do extended oil changes and Ford or any other make does not like that either, maybe its me not liking to follow the rules..

Thanks

I appreciate this discussion Jbrew..thanks for the info, my friend

Hey how about that Ford Fusion of Matt Kenseth winning Daytona. I know it was due to rain but the Fords of Nascar need all the help they can get...We all know how biased Nascar is to Chevrolet, and probably Toyota...

Go Ford or go home!!
