difference between lightning and regular...

what is the difference between a lightning and a regular 5.4l f150 as far as the engine(internal and external) is concerned.

and I know the lightning has a S/C I am just curious if the lightning has stronger internals or what because I was under the impression that all f150s were built with forged internals

The only thing internally is the forged pistons and crank!

My stock 03 5.4 had a forged crank.

Lightning and regular 5.4 have the crappy rods in them.

ah I see the reason I am asking is because I want to do the whole 4.6 to 5.4 swap but from what I have been able to find I can get a regular 5.4l for about 400-800 and the lightning engine I cannot find it for less than 3000

So I was thinking about buying the regular 5.4l engine and then rebuild it with completly forged internals (buy a forged rotating kit) and then either do a twin turbo kit or a ken belle supercharger(but by the way it sounds the supercharger might be a easier option)

what do y'all think

all 5.4's made between 97-01 had the forged crank. All 4v navigators had it. All lightnings/harleys got it as well. 02-04 2v's had a 50/50 shot of getting the forged crank or the cast one.

well I ran into a small problem I cannot for the life of me find a engine rotating kit for a 2003 f150 5.4l engine its like they only make rebuild kits for the 4.6l engine

so since the 2001 is the most recent that has the forged crank I might as well just get the 5.4l engine from that year.

The reason the L motor is so much more money is they are more in-demand and they are supercharged!

Man thanks alot for those sites I might have to go with team jdm for the engine rebuild kit, and then summit for the crank and then buy a gaskets set/head bolts from a different place and then try and figure out what else I will need to finish that off.

well time to go and find a 5.4l engine and if I can find it cheap enough then I will put the money saved towards a kenne belle supercharger.

^^^This is new info for me! How does a person KNOW if their engine has a forged crank? Where do I find it?

Read through this: https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...3-n-5-4-a.html

The third post has comparison pics, and they go on to show casting/forging numbers.
