DPFE Help!

I got a 02 F150 4.6. I got an engine light, so I threw a scanner on it and came up with a P0406 code, so I started hunting for the DPFE sensor. Come to find that, on my truck, I have a "tube mounted" sensor, like the one below, that sits closer to the firewall than the throttle body.

I removed the sensor to inspect the connections, hoses, and whatnot. I reinstalled the same sensor, and started the truck. After that, it seemed like the engine was running really rough, almost like i got a bad coil on a plug, or a dead cylinder. I disconnected the battery and replaced the sensor with a new one. The engine light is off now, but the engine is still running rough. I'm still getting the P1000 self test code.

After the self test is done, theoretically, should the engine get a grip on itself?

P1406 - PO406 = DPFE sensor Downstream hose off or plugged.

This could either be an intentional plugging, blockage by foreign matter, kinking or melting which stops the gas flow. It is not difficult for work on the engine to knock off a sensor pipe either.

Not all applications use the P1406 code. In these vehicles the error code PO406 is recorded instead.

That said - You still shouldn't have drive/run-ability issues. I would suck test the EGR valve, it may be hanging open.

Engine should return to normal operation after a 10 mile drive cycle from boot. A P1000 suggests your EVAP monitor hasn't had the efficient run time yet or is malfunctioning.

You can try re-booting with Fords OBD procedure - it's on the net. Also, those sensors are defective if purchased at a third party supplier. These sensors MUST be purchased at a Ford dealership.

Ok, sounds good. I had replaced the DPFE sensor because of the engine light, and needed to get the smog check done. The truck did not fail the emmisions test, however it did fail the ****ionality part of the test, which lead me to believe that the EGR valve was fine, but I will check it anyway. I know I've driven the truck more than 10 miles too, so the system monitor should be completed by now. I'll check the OBD procedure and see what I can get from that also. Thanks alot!

No problem - Keep in mind the EVAP won't run under a half tank of petrol. At least 3/4 tank and try to keep the slosh down. Yep, there's a slosh factor.

I don't have that web site handy - Fords OBD II procedure, I have a print out I use posted in my shop. I know it's out there tho.

Somethings up with your truck to be running that way - hard to tell from here, but when I reboot - The truck runs right thru all monitors and runs fine while doing so.

Check your warm idle, -What RPMS are your at?
