85w140 Vs. 75w140

My truck calls for 75w140 gear oil in the rear end, but all I can find is 85w140. Would this be ok to use? I want to use royal purple.

I found the RP 75w140 at the Napa auto stores in my area.
Try the Royal Purple website and search for stores in your area.

Napa! Thats one place I havent checked yet! I have checked auto zone, checker, pep boys, and a few others listed on the royal purple dealer listings. I would prefer to get it local before I pay for shipping. Hopfully today will bring some good luck on the hunt.

Try amazon.com

Amazon ships for free It is a little cheaper to buy 12 bottles at a time. Lucas Oil, Red Line, Royal Purple are all available by the case.

PS.....Whatever brand you use, make sure that you get the bottle with the limited slip additive already mixed in. Then you won't need to purchase an extra bottle of friction modifier.

Believe it or not, Walmart has 100% synthetic 75W140 SuperTech at $10.97 a bottle. If you have a LS, you will need to get friction modifier if you use it. I also saw some Mobil 1 at Autozone.

The 85W140 is not full synthetic.

because amsoil is a much better product, i tried RP because of the "performance gain" and "MPG gain" didnt gain crap and at 6 thousand miles it looks horrible too, the amsoil 5w20 i had for 8k came out alot better

I've got Amsoil severe gear 75-90 in my car, a 9" with 35 spline detroit locker 3.70 gears and it works fine so far. I also put RP 75-140 in the truck, it also works fine. RP will come out darker, a) cause it's mixed a bit with old and b) Amsoil is a light amber color to start. Both are great oils, even Redline. You won't lose either way, more importantly is the application and number. Some are for L/S some better for non, but if you have L/S still get a bottle of Motorcraft friction modifier. Even if RP says there's some in their product, the more the merrier.
