F-150 Computer Location
F-150 Computer Location
HI,
I own a 2000 F-150, 4x4, Supercab. I have had 3 coils fail in the last 2 months. All on the #7 spark plug. I took the truck to a garage. He said I need a new computer.
Where is the computer located?
Can I get a computer from junk yard?
How do I know I have the right computer?
Thanks

The computer is located behind the passenger sidekick panel...to remove it you have to open the hood and remove your battery from the tray. 2/10mm nuts hold the harness to the computer which you will then be able to slide the computer out from the clip back inside the cab.
Have you checked the wires to the COP and looked for a short first? Was ther moisture present when you removed the faulty COP? I have a sneaky suspicion the guy who diagnosed the problem is wrong.

The mechanic told me there was a low voltage reading after the new coil was replaced? I'm not sure were he got the reading from. I didn't ask. He is usually correct on his analysis. I just didn't want to pay for a new computer. I want to try to do it myself using a used computer. Is this possible?
If you use a ¼ inch drive ratchet and a 10mm shallow socket you can get to the single 10mm bolt that holds the PCM connector on. I use a palm ratchet and 10mm socket on the bolt. Inside the cab you remove the sill cover, by pulling it up, and that gives access to the kick panel. Pull it straight back and it will unclip. I don't know your mechanic so I would pay the dealer for a second opinion.
