Delo?

I I work at a shop and had a guy come in and talk to us about using Delo in a gas engine. Well I have never heard of it before and from the research I have done all I fine is mixed reviews on doing so. What do you guys know about this or think.

Delo, made by Chevron, is one of the top HDEO oils on the market. It can be used in a gas engine but I'm not certain what the API gas rating is anymore. Probably an API SL if I had to guess. It works especially good in older engines like the 385 series, FE's, Y blocks, etc. It is not going to be ideal for a Triton because of the viscosities available....unless they have come out with something different lately. A Triton should use a 5w-XX, preferably a 5w-20. The Delo is available, at the last I had on it, in 15w-40 and 30wt. These are not ideal for a Triton. Delo also works fabulous in older, highly modded engines where fuel dilution is an issue with full throttle runs like a drag car, roundy car, etc. Quite a few of the major engine builders were specing this oil for use with high lift cams but since the reformulation to the low sulfur diesel fuels, they have cut the base calcium and also the ZDDP which is what the cam builders were looking for. It won't work anymore for the high lift cams or for solid lifter type cams without the aid of extra ZDDP.
Good oil for gas or diesel engines but it's not ideal for the Triton engines.

If I am not mistaken DELO oil either lacks the detergents or has different detergents than motor oil designed for gas engines which makes it good for older engines but not so good for newer engines.

Just the opposite before the newer low sulfur formulations came out. The add packs exceeded the max limits for the newer API SM additives, especially the ZDDP. The newer formulations don't have that issue anymore but the viscosity differences makes it unappealing for the newer gas engines.
