Proper Thermostat 4.6

Hi everyone,

Have a heat issue in real cold weather, none! It was suggested a new thermostat. Being a novice a my own repairs, is getting a 165 better than a 180? 2001 S/Crew 4.6 litre. What else should I know or do if I do take on this task.

Many thanks.

165 is to cold! Stick with the 180.

Factory t-stats are 195 degrees. This allows the engines to heat up properly.
Colder t-stats allow the formation of sludge deposits because the engines do not heat up properly. Plus, the PCM is programmed to the factory stat.

You want a 195* thermo...for the heat and proper running of the motor. HUGE misconception that motors run better or make more power the cooler you can get them. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ideal running temps for modular (or just about any) motor is somewhere around 205*. That's been proven over an over again.

x2. put what the factory had in her that is your best bet. i would recommend a superstat tho. its set to fail in the open position so it will not over heat and crack a head on you.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Changed it over the weekend (195) and what a difference. Heat in the truck and temp gauge doesn't look like it died->. Thanks again. Many more questions to come.

the non supercharged trucks use a 195* while the supercharged trucks use a 180* from the factory
