f-150 help??

My 98 4.6L goes into a bit of a skipping frenzy during a low rpm pull like going up a hill. Also skips around 2000 rpm at 70-75 mph on interstate. This happens more frequent when the truck has ran or been driven a while. Sometimes the truck runs fine...then sometimes it skips. If i push down on the gas when it is skipping and the truck downshifts it bogs down as if it is losing power.....again sometimes it does it and other times it is fine.

My check engine light says p0430 and p0401, which p0430 has to with catalyst below deficiency bank 2 while p0401 is insufficient flow for EGR

Does anyone else have this problem or know what is causing it to skip at times and lose power? What should I do....already replaced coil pack on bank 2 side.

it may be more than one problem. you may need a catalytic converter. and the insufficient flow is normally a DPFE sensor or the hoses that go to it. ford parts only for the DPFE. if you do need a cat then you can just get 2 high flow magnaflows since they are alot cheaper.
when was the last tuneup?
what kind of plugs and wires?
how old is fuel filter?
what is the current mileage?

im not sure how old the plugs are or what kind they are....i put new plug wires on the truck about a year ago when i had an engine misfire on cylinder 8....the new wires fixed that.........now it's a little different...feels like a misfire but the computer doesn't read one.....im not sure how old the fuel filter is either....the truck has 180,000 miles on it

I figured the p0401 egr insufficient flow code is from carbon build up in the passages....not too worried about that b/c that code had been on for years

suggestions?

Do what you have to in order to clear the codes. That's not smart running around with an EGR code without fixing it - that might be why your cat is tripping a CEL now. Clean the passages and inspect all the associated hoses - and replace the DPFE with a Ford part, not aftermarket.

If you don't know how old or what type the plugs are, replace them. Use only Motorcraft.
