P1401 and P0133 codes 5.4
P1401 and P0133 codes 5.4
Tuned the '97 that i posted about a while back "Rough Idle and Smoke." Put new motorcrafts, global coils and the 3 stage rebuilt injectors from ebay. The truck was giving a #7 and #2 misfire prior to tuning. Now it seems it's running just as bad and is throwing these two codes. I don't know where to go from here. I did the plug change as per Matt's link [ thanks Matt] and used the injectors that some on here have recommended. Can anybody give suggestions? I am about to bring it to a mechanic, worried about engine internals now. It had stopped smoking but started again, think it loaded up with fuel.
The 1401 is a drive cyle code. It comes from disconnecting the battery from the work you did. When things are right it will go away when all criteria are met.
The 0133 refers to O2 sensor CKT slow respnse {bank 1 sensor 1}
Do a little research before replacing it. But a replace may fix the problem
What color is the smoke coming out of it?
Oil smoke is a blueish color, can affect that sesor.
Black smoke would likely be an injector overloading the system.

Acording to my DTC lookupthat came with my scanner, the P1401 is a drive cycle code.
The 133 points to the O2 sensor. As I said don't change it, as it is probably not the problem.
A rich fuel mixture will give blackish smoke. If it has been smoking long, look inside the tailpipe and see what color it is, and if it has a heavy coating of any kind.
Oil smoke is white with a blueish tint to it, but if it is smoking bad, the odor of it should give an indication as to what it is burning. Also what ever it is burning is probably effecting the O2 sensor
There are guys here that know plenty more about these emission control systems than I do, I'm sure they'll chime in later.
I do however know engines in general very well
Edit :I looked closer. The 1401 does point to the EGR circuit, the dpfe to be exact.
Sorry:o

Look for vaccumn leaks around the left bank, and that the line to the dpfe are correctly connected.
Here is a link that may be of some help.

the smoke does have blue tint to it. but after receiving another code, 1411 i think, i did a lil chechin round on here and found out it could be a bad pcv hose. it tore apart in my hand. i will try to rectify this and go from there. the smoke is eractic. i'm hoping once i actually can get it on the rode that it will work itself out. also got a #7 misfire, that is gonna be something else.
Trending Topics
1411=Secondary air incorrect dwnstrm flow detected.
That number 7 missfire. Are you getting water from a possible heater hose leak in there
The pcv could be sucking some oil due to incorrect vaccumn, at least we'll say that for now

i cleared the codes after repairing the pcv line (a generic vacuum elbow and reducer on the hanging rack at Oreilly's). the truck accellorates better but still has a miss in it. sent my son to drive it 'til it gives me the next code. what should i look for if it is still #7? i changed that one twice. can i check the lead to an individual coil? When i pulled the plugs yesterday they were all to far open on gap (.060 and up). the number seven was a lil wet, but it did'nt appear to be oil. it had i misfire and assume that was fuel that did not burn left on the plug. i think if i can get this thing running it will flat out haul a**. just below 2k rpm the mis is apparent. i think brew is right, i think the smoke is unburned fuel.
Plugs gapped over .60 = Not good.
Cylinders not firing = Ruins the 02's and melts the cat cones together solid. Then they plug and begin to glow.
Coils are bad ?
Man that truck is messed up.
Needs plugs, coils and O2's now. Hopefully you can save your cats.
It just needs to be done right.
