Finland "Navi" owner needs your help.

I thought I would throw this into a new thread so it doesn't get buried in the other thread.

Hi everyone from Finland.

First Iīm sorry for my bad english, but try to understund . I just bought 3 weeks ago Navigator 1999 57tmls as my xmasgift for myself and had even worst problems than you, most of the problems were solved after I install new adjustable aftermarket fuelregulator and set fuel pressure exactly to factory values. After that it has been ok for everyday driving, and WOW what it did for Navis economy, before it took about 23L/100km(10.2mpg) and now same type of driving takes only 14.8L/100km=16mpg!!! (around town, highway 110km/h= 70 mph, accelerations as testing and usually short trips 3-15mls and starting with cold engine... and we have quite cold here, at the moment -5*c=20*F and it is getting cold, even to -10*F). We have here 2 gasolinetypes, 95 and 98 octane and I use 95 oct and it costs 1.55usd/Litre so fast calculation tells that 10 mls takes about 3.67usd....... Cheap car for everyday driving..... and I wonder why everyone thinks Iīm not the smartest one.... Friends have common cars like Toyota Corolla, Nissan Primera and those takes about 9L/100km but I hato those little, noisy minicars without any equipments..... everyone has their hobbies, and mine is cars, especially exotic cars (Alfa Romeo, Honda Prelude, Lancia, Audi QuattroTurbo, Range-Rover, Jaguar...and here exotic means also US-cars... ). I always buy cars with some kind of problems and take fixing and repairing as a challenge and thatīs why I usually purchase cars mentioned few lines upper..... I can get them cheap and when they are fixed and repaired, it is not so fun just to drive and I need new challenge, I just sell them with nice profit and buy next one....

But those same symptoms remaints that you all have, missfires, backfires etc at WOT and also when passing, when you just push little throttele without trans ghanges lower gear..... I have replaced 2 coils and I have 2 new ones waiting. I have tester and I have been watching live sensor data while driving and nothing seems to be problem when it misses and bfires.

There are only 2 things I have marked. One is that it is retarding sparkadvence from about 25 deg to 10-12 deg when problems occur, it seems that knock-sensor is present at that time. But any codes are not been stored. And second issue is that fuel pressure drops immediatelly after engine is shut off, so today I go to workshop (where I work every evening, weekend and holidays, for workshop owner and also for my own company) and check fuelpump assy. One possible cause could be leaking injector, but pressure drops too fast to be injector and leaking injector would cause another problems also while driving. My best guess without opening fuel tank, is that pipe from pump to tank fuel outlet is leaking. It holds pressure with steady throttle and with normal driving, but when it needs little more gas, pressure is dropped for while and causes missfire and knock-sensor reads it as knocking and retards sparkadvance.

I have other problems also with electrics, someone in States or in Estonia have tried to be professional and tried to fix something and Iīm not sure what he is tried to do and why..... Most of problems have been solved, rear power ventwindows are working and rear ac/heater also works. I have 2 rear heater concoles at roof and when I adjust rear blower speed, backlights of those roofconsoles dimms when speed is increased, power to backlights comes from blower motor power and motor takes power, backlight loses power.

Most annoying problem (with engine) is that steering wheel ***** doesnīt work at all and I havenīt found that "redundant steering control module", it is only common thing between those ***** (ac, radio and cruisecontrol).

That Navigator is shipped from Miami to Estonia in 2005 and it was registred first time to Estonia now 12/2008 when I bought it, so it has been under repair or stored for 3 years. But it is in very good condition, there is no leaks, not a single drop under car (engine, transm, transf, rear and fron axles), airsusp working ok, no rust, body and paintshop are ok, not new but in very good condition for itīs age.

I get that "certificate of title" with car, what paper that really is? There is lines that says "*****SALVAGE TITLE********REBUILDABLE", does it mean that it is been in accident and been destroyed or something? I have bought here in Finland 8 cars from "AVK, www.avk.fi ", thatīs the place were all the cars that incurance companies have claimed from accidents, thefts etc is been sold..... But I have looked any signs of accidents etc and found nothing, only weird wiring and electricjob...

Certificate says owner is Illinois National, is that car dealer or what?

OMG..... where all that text came from...... hope you had nervs to read it all...

Regards from cold Northern Europe
Juha

I almost forgot one thing. When I accelerate and rear wheels are slipping, it moves power to front axle and that makes horrible klonk klonk sound, it sounds like it engages front wheels and then it doesnīt slip anymore and disengage frontend and then it slips again ank engage.......... but that is hard to tell what is sound of engage and what is backfireing and are those related together and affects to eachother........ And that sound comes with A4WD and 4WD, no difference, and it uses all 4 wheels, there is snow everywhere, so I would notice in seconds if there was only 2WD. And rear axle is limited slip type, when cornering in snow, itīs lot of fun to play....... Iīm quite old man, but there is little boy inside me when Iīm behind steering wheel...

Welcome to the F150online site.
I'll be honest, I will have to read what you wrote a few times before I offer any advice. It has to be broken down a bit.
I'll start with your salvage title. Something must have happened to that Navi to have the title salvaged. Accident, fire, flood etc. If you say it looks clean then I suspect that it is possible the vehicle was stolen and recovered or something illegal here in the states happened. I do not know. I know this, you have the Navi and the title, so it's your's legally.

Let me read through your questions again and I will try to answer some of them for you. There are people on this site who are more qualified to answer questions about the Navigator. You may want to start your own thread (topic) so you get more answers to address your problems.

Thanks a lot

Iīm at workshop now and I dropped tank and removed fuelpump assy and everything, made maxpressure and pressure hold tests and pump is ok. Now everything is in their own places and I am back in startingpoint. I made also co-tests with 4gas-tester and result was fine, everything ok.

Iīm not going to just live with these problems, Iīll solve them, easy way or hard way.....

My guess is that my Navi has been stolen, there is quick-connectors (donīt know what thosa are in english) in ignition lock wiring so you can put extra wire to every wire with abico-connector in few seconds......

I have permanent military-post in Finnish Defense Forces and my one job is to maintenance, inspect and take care in every way our service-vehicles and those are russian heavy-duty 6x6 offroad-trucks, some kind of copies of US military trucks from 1950-1960īs and Navi is very easy and logical comparing to those.... there is just 1000 times more wiring and when someone "pro" has been there and made his own wiring, there is lot to solve before I can enjoy my Navi.

As soon as technical problems are solved, I can concentrate on "tuning" and everything that I like(=love) to do. There is waiting Ford Racing Harley Dav 20" chrome rims, Clarion DVD player with motorized touch-screen, Monacor Carpower 1400w amp, 2 x 12" subwoofers, 2-way speakersystem for doors, back-up camera, Defa-security system, Led-lights, HID-lightpackage, webasto-heater with remote-control...........

the front and rear axles must be rotating at the same speed for a smooth 4x4 shift. Try to shift early when they are rotating at the same speed.

I have A4WD on all the time (other positions are 4WD and 4WD LO) and owners manual (and my experience from other alltime-4WD) tells that there is always 4WD on, but in that A4WD-position transfer allows little speed-difference between front and rear axle and when rear wheels are slipping and speed-difference increaces enought, it locks transfer automatically and divide manually power 50/50 to rear and front. There is label in transfer case saying "TOD = torque on demand" and other shortening meaning the same.....

Professional sergeant daytimes. Evenings, weekends and holidays mechanic with "difficult" cars no-one else wants to deal with......

Now that's funny Sounds like a good part time job.
I am actually looking for a new project car. I bought a 1986 RX7 (vin# was
10th anniversary edition), a couple years ago and went right through it. I put some awesome rims and tires on, modded the exhaust, very nice sound system, body was perfect just needed paint & put new scuba skins on the interior. Cleaned, tuned, and went through the engine. Didn't rebuild the rotary, had great compression. I drove it for about six months and put it up for sale in the front lawn. Sold it in 2 days and made $2k in profit. It was really nice when I got finished with it. That car had some zip to it. Loved driving it but it was definately a magnet for the Police.
I am thinking, 60's Mustang, 68 or 69 GTO or Lemans, but I really would like to get my hands on a Cuda. Already did the Vette thing for awhile.

GUESS WHAT, DUDES...... Yesterday I opened, cleaned and checked fuel pump and assy, also clean and sprayed synth vaseline to connectors (helps with water and contact), blowed with compressed air all the fuel lines, cleaned and measured with Fluke those COPs, cleaned and sprayed almost all connectors in engine....... And didnīt even try to accelerate or WOT driving home last night, just normal driving within speed limits (first 10mls 65mph and last 5 mls town cruising about 40-50mph), I Couldnīt believe fuel consumption, 17.9mpg and there was winter conditions and 20*F. Navi worked like dream......

But bigger surprise was today, I started to drive our base and there was snow and ice and little boy inside me woke up and I did little drifting with 4 wheels slipping...... and then I noticed WOT and everything worked just ok, no hesitating, no backfire, just lot of torque and fun........ And driving to workshop I tried to get engine backfire and missfire but it didnīt, just worked fine...

But one problem is still there...... Bad sound when accelerating, especially in slippery surface....... 4WD is working, that I can tell fot sure..... But when rear wheels are slipping and front wheels are getting more torq, it sounds like someone is hammering frame with rubber/plastichammer, not a metal-like sound, softer....... And that worries me a lot.....

Iīll have to be honest and tell you that I dont know which one is part-time job...... I'm here at workshop almost always, lot of more hours that in military base, at the moment I'm installing Webasto-heater to 2006 Scania R470 truck and I'll be here probably to midnight or later..... And Scania is too big to get inside, so I have to work outside

Mazda Rx is great car, I was byuing one, but it had too much problems, especially with engine and wankel isn't so fun to work with.... I'm looking for next summer-car and there is few cheap, intresting car on market, Lincoln MK VIII 1995, Saab 9-3 convertible turbo 1999, Camaro V8 1996, Toyota Supra Turbo manual 1988, Nissan 300ZX twinturbo 1991..... Let see when Navi is working and I have time to concentrate on those "toys"... Vette is one that I want to buy, but there is problem to get also my 2 kids with me cruising... Bike and boat are too in my shopping-list for next summer.....

Now coffee-break is over and back outside...... There's dark and cold.....
