Throttle won't respond

I have a 05 F-150 with a 5.4. I have 80k miles on the truck and maintain in regularly.

It was raining today and as I was driving the maintenance light came on and the throttle would not respond. The engine stays on but pushing on the gas pedal does nothing.

I pulled over and let it sit and it started back up and after a mile it did it again, but now the check engine light is on.

Is this a known problem? Could it be because of the rain? Weird (good) thing is the engine continues to run and sounds fine.

Please help!

Thanks!!!!

Does the 05 have an electronic throttle? Sounds like a problem it would cause and a problem with an electric relay. If it is still cable, then open the hood up and see what is going on with the throttle when someone is revving it up for you. Not much help but its a start.

Fly by wire garbage. Try resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery with the lights on for several minutes. If that doesn't cure it you probably need to take it in to the dealer.

Good chance it's the potentiometer, the "rheostat" on the throttle (gas peddle) in the cab. Don't go bad often but they do go bad. Next guess would be the throttle body motor (that actually opens the throttle butterfly). But I wouldn't personally go throwing parts at it. I am assuming since the throttle doesn't work you can't take it and have a free scan done to try and determine what the scanner says. Under the circumstances I would try using a DVM on the "potentiometer" (should be able to set to ohms) and see if it changes resistance. Second, if that doesn't show a problem I would try jumping juice to the throttle body motor to see if that works. In the process I would make sure no wiring plugs are loose or corroded. Good Luck!

I took it to Ford this morning. They found nothing wrong with it. I did however un-hook the battery last night to clean the posts. This did clear the computer so Ford did not have a code to trace.. DUH.. My bad..

Hopefully it was a one time thing, which it will probably come back. But Ford was really cool and didn't charge me to look at it. They are going to leave the ticket open since they think the problem will come back. Other than a really bad experience at Dublin Ford (which has since closed) I have pretty happy with their service.

Thanks again guys.

These 04 and newer trucks seems to really be effected if the battery starts to go bad. A friend on mine had his battery in his 06 supercrew lariat 4x4 slowing go out. It first started out as a strange shifting problem, then it slowly turned into more computers problems. We did not think it was the battery because the headlights would work just fine with the truck off with what seemed to be plenty of juice. I was surprised that he told me after the warranty work that it was just a bad battery and they put a new on in. He has not had any problems since.

Unhooking it might of just reset everything for you and make it work normal again.

It was a bad throttle body. Judging from how the truck runs now it seems that is had been going out slowly for some time. $600 later, my truck runs great. Much more responsive, more power, smoother.

Thanks for the advice guys!
