Hey guys...this is more of a "Should I" question than a "How do I" question...I have a '97 F-150 4x4 reg. cab stepside xl with the 4.6 and M5r2 tranny and 3.08 rear. I love the truck...hate the amemic 4.6. I have found a 0 mile 99 expedition 5.4 motor for $1800 and a 0 mile M5r2 tranny for $625 and would like your opinion on swapping them into my truck. It is in great condition for being 11 years old and having 97k on the clock. Besides the initial investment of $2500 in engine/trans, how much more do you think I will spend to get this thing swapped over? I read JMCs post concerning the things you had to do to get this to work and it seems like a careful re-assembly of 4.6 access. to the 5.4 block and a computer re-flash. A couple of months ago, I tried to sell this truck for $5500 B/O and couldn't get a bite besides a few lowballers($3500?) and tire kickers. I have decided to keep it unless I can find another Like it with the 5.4 and automatic, but I like the manual. I guess my questions are: Is it worth it? Will there be a respectable amount of power increase? Will the M5r2 handle the power increase?
If you do indeed plan on keeping the truck then I say go for it. As far as the Mazda gearbox holding the 5.4s torque, that can be answered by JMC. I know he's been through a few but he's also procharged.
I am a little hesitant on puting a 145,000 mile motor in my truck. Its only 10k more than I have now but i'd hate to have to rebuild it down the road or even do head gaskets. I dont have the money to rebuild it either. Oh well... cheers

I lost count on how many trannies that I have replaced. It is at least 5. I put this last tranny in a few months before the Procharger. At least 3 of them died by the hand of the 4.6.
Is the swap worth it? No one has ever complained that it wasn't.

...wish there was space for that 5 or 6 speed ZF tranny...I can't find any info. concerning an "easy" ZF swap for anything 97-up F-150, so I guess it's back to the drawing board! JMC...how do you do it...my arms ache at the thought of just doing clutch jobs!
Well guys I appreciate the advice and direction on this swap but it wont be happening. Ive been doing landscape/lawncare for 3 years and my boss which is my good friend is going to buy the truck and fix the tranny. Its a 7700 w/ 5.4 so it will suit him well. The reason im not buying it is cause my education. I need to get through this semester so down the road I can buy a brand new 150 w/ a 5.4. So my plans are on hold and i'll just be happy that I picked up a gryphon pretty cheap. Thanks again guys
