Idler pulley

Hi, I was replacing my idler pulley and the part that it bolts into broke off. Is there anyway to repair this other than remove and replace the whole cover?

Engine and model year. Where on the front cover is the pulley located. Some 5.4 engines had 2 idlers as well as the tensioner.

1998 V8 Triton 4.6 Windsor. Left side top (passenger). It appears to be made of pot metal or cast aluminum. Very chintzy.

Unfortunately it is a critical one and it must be used. How badly is it damaged? To fix it you would need to weld it. Check with a welder in your area to see if it can be welded. You would then need to drill and tap it. That is a critical operation as the hole needs to be straight or the pulley will be crooked and it could launch belts. failing that The only other solution is to replace it as you mentioned.

Pretty bad, broke in 2 pieces. Kind of afraid to try to weld it with it being cast aluminum as the cover is over the timing chains, and one false move and I would have metal in there and have even bigger issues.

Looks like you will be replacing it. http://www.car-part.com When you do a search for the front cover they call it a timing cover. It will be in the "T"s.

PS your VIN code is 6 for Windsor.

My brother works at a family owned tool and die shop. We are going to give something else a try. If it works, I'll post pics.
