On the 1997-2003 Models i have heard there is a plastic vacuum line going into the firewall where battery is that can get broken causing your problem...
You did not post truck model or year so hope this helps...

when you accelerate hard the compressor is suppose to disengage so nothing gets ruined. if it doesnt matter how hard you accelerate then it may very well be a vacuum leak.
could you post the year and motor?

It is most likely a vaccum leak off somewhere. Either a line, or else the checkball on the line that runs into the firewall. It is designed to hold vaccum in the lines when you mash the gas (since more gas means low vaccum) so your mode doors stay where you want them, instead of defaulting to the defroster vents when no vaccum is present.
