do i need a new MAF sensor going from a 4.6 to a lightning engine

i have heard that the 4.6 MAF sensor could not be tuned to work with the lightning

YES, due to the increase volume of air... at least get a 90mm or 95mm.

a $200 MAF is good insurance against a ruined engine

Get a Lightning 90mm MAF. It is already calibrated for the 42# injectors.
