04 5.4 3v into an 01 4.6 SCREW?

Long story short, my wife wrecked her 04 EB Expedition yesterday. Ripped the front PS tire, rotor, spindle, caliper, axle, and A-arm completely out, scraped up the PS and otherwise did a bang up job of fawking up a darn nice vehicle. She and my son are fine though.

I got a crazy thought though, could i actually swap the 5.4 into my 01 Screw? I know it's not a bolt in, plug and play swap, but what would it take? Both are 4WD if it matters. I wonder if I could just yank the engine, trans, and transfer case from the Expedition and drop it in the truck without extensive modifications. i.e. will it physically fit?

Forgot to mention, the 4.6 has 125,000 on the odometer, the 5.4 has 77k. The Screw has ~18k on a new trans.

'04 Expedition isn't a 3V.

Hmm, I thought it was. That tidbit aside, how much work would be involved and what would I need from the expedition. Could I conceivably pull the entire driveline and ECU and drop it in the screw?

I suppose. The engines themselves didn't change very much between an '01 Screw and an '04 Expedition.

Most excellent. I've been a stranger around here for a while now, where's the latest and greatest 4.6L - 5.4L swap thread and or is there a writeup/guide yet?

Is is possible to pull the ECU and engine harness from the Ex and drop it ALL into the F-150 and have it work? Would I have to change ignitions out as well?

the '04 has a 2 valve 5.4, just pull the 5.4 out and bolt in in place of your 4.6 get a custom tune and you're all set after a couple wiring harness mods.

toss the 4.6 into the expy and leave the 5.4 engine cover on it and don't say anything and sell it to the insurance company

Why not just use the pcm from the expi as well as the wiring harness as he has the complete truck?

The insurance company currently HAS the Expedition. It only has 3 wheels attached to it right now anyway. What about the transmission though? I want to use the one out of the Ex if possible. I think it's probably stronger than what's in my Screw. All in all there are 50k less miles on the driveline in the Expedition than there are on my truck. Everything being equal I'd like to just swap it all in. If I swapped the ECU would I still need a custom tune? I prefer things to be bolt in, and not require special software, chips, or programming.

That's the question!

Also, how would or should I work the ignition if I do that. Isn't the key programmed to the PCM?

I don't see why not - That's what I would do, swap everything and you wouldn't have to tune.

You'll have to buy the truck back from the insurance co. first. There not stupid, forget about scamming them. Don't kid yourself, Insurance fraud can be a purdy serious slap upside the head. Not worth it.

It's totaled right?, -or are you still waiting for an adjuster to come out?

I am NOT considering insurance fraud, never crossed my mind. The swap was pending an adjuster saying it was totaled. The preliminary report over the phone reporting hte accident said it was a goner, the second phone call they said it was almost certainly a goner. They sent the car 30 miles up the road to their total loss adjuster. Well he called and said it was 35% from being a total loss so they were sending it in to put it on a rack for further inspection. Fair enough

Unless she tweaked the frame/body really well I don't see it being totaled now, but it's still up in the air. I was going to buy it back for the salvage value if it wasn't too high and them do the swap and then part out the rest. It's a loaded EB edition so that buoyed the value a little bit.

If the swap goes down I want to run the Screw with the Expy driveline and PCM/tune.

Check the 8th digit of your Expedition VIN. is it an R or an L? An L is a 5.4 2 valve and an R is a 5.4 4 valve.
