Ticking noise

Hey guys

I have a 98 4.6L, I started up my truck this morning after sitting all night, when it turned over, the RPM's went up and as they usually do and as the RPM's were coming down it made a loud tick tick tick tick noise. It kinda sounded like a piece of metal was bouncing around somewhere in the engine or drivetrain or something of the sort. Anybody have any idea what it was or what it could be?

Sorry if there has already been a post about this, I do not have time to search with my school schedule for the rest of the week. Any Advice would help!!

Have a great day everyone!

D

It was serviced at the end of summer before I left SD for Flagstaff, so end of August... I don't remember what oil was put in, I don't have the papers with me but this just started happening, also it is only when the engine is cold. If its warm there is no noise.

do you know whether you got synthetic or regular oil put in? and do you know where the sound is coming from?(front, back, left side, right side, top end, bottom end) i can only think of it being something with the lubrication system since its only when its cold. does you oil pressure gauge read normal. try starting it up and shutting it off after it starts a couple times and see if it happens.

Did it go away? Like when it warmed up? Try broken manifold stud or two... I posted about this last year.... I got "piston slap" "nasty oil"....blah blah...check the manifold gaskets first if the noise goes away when its prperly heated up.

I was in Alaska when it got serviced and my dad brought it in so i could not be able to tell you what kind of oil went in it. A buddy of mine told me it could possible be the piston lifter or something like that. When it starts up it only makes the ticking noise about six times then goes away. I started it cold, turned it off then started it again and the noise was still there, did the same thing again and it was still making the noise. So i let it idle for about 2 minutes turned it off, turned it back on and the noise was not there. It is hard to tell where the noise is coming from but possibly the front left under the hood... and the oil gauge reads normal when the engine is cold and when it is warmed up. The noise is not a quiet one either...it is hard to explain but you can definitely hear it well when your in the cab.

I cant see the brand, but it is half white half blue with a red stripe going through it diagonally. It says V465 on it if that helps at all.

well i'm having problems trying to find out what the filter is. all i could find is something like wisconsin engine parts or something like that. i would reccommend you go get a purolator, wix, or motorcraft filter. they have anti drain back valves in them so they dont let all the oil drain back into the crankcase. this way the oil pump is primed at start up and doesnt have a dry start. thats the only thing i can think of without having to get inside the motor.

hey guys thanks for all the input. I changed the oil filter to a motocraft filter and it still did not make a difference. So i went to the Ford dealership and they diagnosed it and found that the starter was staying engaged. So they replaced it along with the idler arm and the serpentine belt. Problem is fixed!!
