Power goes flat when passing

Sorry if I'm asking a common question but I've had my 05 F150 SCrew 4x4 for over 2 years now & I thought it felt this way the very first time I test drove it. It has the 5.4 & had @ 35k miles when I bought it & about 60k now.
If you just floor it from a standstill I don't think it's real obvious (don't do that much anymore) but when you floor it @55mph to 65mph to pass it kicks down & seems like its going to accel alright then it actually seems like something cuts in & holds it back for a little then it kinda comes out of it.
Since I've owned the truck I've serviced the trans, replaced the air filter a time or two & just recently changed the fuel filter. Seems to be the same as when I bought it.

Well this is the laziest vehicle I've owned in the last 15 years. But it's probably the heaviest & it has the standard 3.55 rear.
But seriously it feels like it downshifts to pass starts to accel for let's say 2 sec then it seems like a few thousand pounds are added to the truck then after maybe 3 or 4 seconds it revs on out & shifts.

this is why so many of us bought tuners. Custom programs will wake it up!

If you want to floor it at 55, take it out of OD first. The tranny does not like going from OD right to 2nd and it's gonna lag.

I rented an 04 for a day when they first came out. That lag you are referring to was par for the coarse back then. I believe a reflash of the PCM took care of that.

like bluejay said custom tunes will wake up your truck. their $400 for custom tuning from vmp using xcal 2 or 3. and PHP has a sale on the gryphon (edge recased and custom tuned) i think its $465 regularly $499. Gryphon has a screen. xcal's do not.

An Edge programmer is the best thing I have ever bought for my truck! Programmer,Intake and Exhaust will have your truck feeling like a totally different animal!

I went with a custom valve body & tuner for this problem. My truck rips now.

Thanks for input guys

glc it doesn't matter if you have od cancelled or not it acts the same. It drops to second gear, starts to gain speed then half way through second it feels just like you let off to part throttle then finally revs on out.

JMC I thought I had heard something along those lines about the reflash. Might have seen it on here. I talked to my buddy at the dealership about it awhile back but he got relocated before I could get my truck to him. That's my next step.

I know where there is an Edge at I think I could buy just wanted the truck to run right first.
I had left out earlier that I had an original 40 series Flow with tailpipe but it changed nothing.

I bought my 05 new in Mar, 2205. It had a horrible hesitation when I tried to pass. It nearly got me killed on a two lane highway. I took it to the dealer and it was reflashed. That helped tremendously. Then, I started reading on here about the Edge, bought one and it was awesome. I could never go back to running the stock reflashed program. Then, I upgraded to the custom tunes of the Gryphon. Once again, even more awesome.

My 2007 F-150 XLT Supercab with 5.4 and 3.55 gears does the same thing.I had it re-flashed once but it still does the same thing. It's the only thing i don't like about the truck.I think maybe it has to do with the drive by wire but i don't know.I think when your paying over $30,000.00 for a truck it shouldn't have that problem.I think it should be hesitation free without having to have a tuner fix it.I had a 2004 Ranger Supercab 4X4 with the 4.0 S.O.H.C and it would downshift right now no hesitation like the F-150 has.Sorry for the long rant but i think Ford should have been able to fix this problem after 4years.

Later Mark.

what gears do you have? do you have larger than stock tires? have you considered e-fans, underdrive pulleys and a cai?

since it's a 4X4 you probably have 3.55 look into a gear swap to 4.10's

appearantly your truck is running "right' according to the factory tune. No matter what tuning device you get, (gryphoon, xcal2, xcal3, livewire, diablo etc...) get custom tunes for your truck

Hit a speed shop and hop on the dyno. It's best to find one that carries Superchips Custom Tuning (SCT.) SCT offers multiple-program chips, hand-held tuners, and dataloggers for Ford vehicles.

That way they can burn the chips/create and modify the tunes in-house while you're on the dyno.
