Ignition systems
I heard a good MSD ignition box would provide alot better fire (hotter). Is this true and if so should I try going with MSD on everything from distributor to wires? And Is it worth the money?
msd's distributors are ford style distributors. they were mainly built to replace dodge and chevy distributors before the vortec motors but they were able to make a high performance ford distributor. fords are good for up to 9000rpm and msd is good for 11000rpm. the ignition boxes provide more spark than factory but not noticeable. they shoot 10 sparks in the time the factory box does 1. and wires dont do much except what all wires do which is lead the spark to the cylinder. i would only suggest maybe a msd coil if yours goes bad. they are better and from what i understand they are cheaper. i'd just go with factory or napa beldin wires. no autozone crap. autolite or motorcraft plugs. cap and rotor dont matter who its from. keep your distributor as long as its still good. you can advance the timing to 15 or 16* (maximum for 302 is 18*) for a little bit better performance, but you'll have to use premium fuel.
Hey thanx for all the help. I got enough knowledge to repair things, or replace them but just don't have the knowledge of what to do to make things perform better, but this info sure helps. If I had the money I'd just purchase a new Ford Racing crate motor and tranny to match!!!!
