Quick question...coil pack

I have a 1999 ford f150 lariat v8 4.6.

Do I have a 'coil pack' or a 'coil on plug'?

My ford seems to be terrible about water... drove it through deep water once and I got a horrid misfire. Took it to the shop and I got charge too much, as well as a coil pack replacement.

I recently had to drive through water again (stupid Florida rain flooding roads) and now I have the misfire again as well as the check engine light on.

Going to borrow a buddies code reader tomorrow night to see what is going on, however I am suspecting the coil pack shorted again.

However, after reading some forums, I am not sure if my model has a coil pack or coil on plugs?

Yours should be coil on plug. Coil packs are easy to identify....toward the front of the engine on each side with four spark plug wires coming out of each one.

Hmm... now I am trying to figure out why the shop charged me $100 for ONE replacement... if I had a coil pack I understand, but replacing one coil on plug at that price (for just the part) seems a bit excessive.

Doing it myself this time around.

A new COP is like 80 bucks from Ford,,,that would be why they charged so much!

Yikes! No wonder.

OK, follow up questions... are the COPS interchangeable, or do I need to get a special one for cylinder #2 and a different one for #3 and so on?

Just wondering so I can hit the parts store before I run to my buddies to find out which one is misfiring.

U have "Coil Pack's" Seriously, don't buy a coil for a COP system, you can't use it. Give her a tune up - MC plugs and good set of wires.

The 4six didn't get upgraded to COP systems until late in 2000- right before they went PI in 2001.

The biggest upgrade in 99 was the 5four getting PI heads. The 4six lost a couple more truck lengths that year

Yup, a '99 4.6 should still be twin coil-packs. A new Motorcraft coil pack is about $85, and most jobber brands are anywhere from $40-60. Not too much more to go Motorcraft (especially when compared to COP coils x 8)...I'd do em both right away.

If you go through water a lot, use dielectric grease liberally. Motorcraft plugs, wires, and coil packs are the best way to go.

Thanks for the help, all.

I picked up a couple of new COP's from autozone for $43 each. Plugged in the code reader, and it was cylinder #1 misfiring... the sweetest and easiest one to get to. Had that thing off and the new one on in 15 minutes.

Now to hunt down the annoying acceleration shudder...

Sorry- 99 4.6L's DO NOT have COP's.. That's all there is to it !!! 5.4's did on 99, but 99 4.6L's had packs (2) until 2000-2001.

I call bullsh^t and bad info posted from this user.

Well others search these threads and posts for answers. I don't care who you are,- or what; There is a need to be correct/corrected wether you approve or not.
