best options for crate motor?
best options for crate motor?
ok so i have an 02 f-150 crew cab, with a 5.4 triton motor, i've had it for a couple years and taken good care of it, the only thing is the mileage is getting way up there, i'm up at 170,000 right now, and it's paid off, and set up very nicely. the only thing is the motor is all stock, so it looks good but is slow. My question is what would be the best options for me as far as possibly dropping a crate motor in?
Would it be better to have someone completely rebuild the motor and build it for power? or just drop say a nice crate motor in? I'm looking to spend somewhere in the 5-8k range when i get ready to do this.... but i'm don't have any skills when it comes to rebuilding a motor or doing the actual drop. I'm in the dallas texas area so is there some good shops around here to be able handle a job like this? and me not be worried about the quality of work?
basically i'm just wondering the cost to power benifits of each way of doing things?
any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the site
what do you want to accomplish when you are done?
are you going to redo the trans at the same time?
what crate engines are you looking at?
I think it would be cheaper and easier to have someone rebuild your current motor and add some cams (comp cams 102500 or similar) with ported and polished heads, larger injectors, larger throttle body with a ported and polished TB elbow, long tube headers, underdrive pulleys and a good sounding exhaust.
or you can always rebuild and add a supercharger.
search this forum all over and look at some of the different builds people here have done

well I was thinking that if I dropped a crate motor in I would go ahead and switch to a tranny and rear end that could handle the extra power.
As far as crate engines I wasn't even sure what would be good options, whether I could drop just about anything in or if there is a limited amount of engines that would fit, along with a tranny and exhaust without serious modifications, and fabricating. I had thought about the supercharger idea, but i just didn't know what would be the gains in doing all that you listed, vs dropping a crate engine in that was good for 400+ hp. i'll start checking out everybody's builds on here though, and see what options would work.
If you were to take a rough guess though on doing all that u listed to the motor with the rebuild, cams and port work, what would you estimate a fair price would be around?

most "crate" engine for the 5.4 SOHC is for the SVT built trucks.
I'd say you could put 4 grand into a rebuild and eaton supercharger swap/lightning engien conversion.
You have the 4r70 you allready have built to handle the power and if you have a 9.75 rear end you'll be fine.
as far as superchargers go look into a used procharger/vortech/paxton etc as long as it's innercooled or you can add an innercooler to it you'll be fine

Read Built54's project go fast thread. I think he paid around 5 or 6 grand for his set up. You are pretty much limited to 5.4 engines with out dooing major modification and spending insane money. Supercharging really seems the way to go to get the most out of the 5.4 If I were going to modify my truck I'd do that.
awesome, i'll be checking into a supercharger setup and checking out that build, one last question, does anyone know of any shops in the dallas or fort worth area of texas that would be good to have a supercharger and all work done, then tuned on a dyno?
