Well I put a new relay in, got a starter from an 08, put that in... Now that starter is Fubarred... I believe I know why, It sounds like the starter is still trying to start even though the truck is running.. What could possibly do that??? Faulty Wiring harness??? Touching Wires??? I would hate to spend 150 dollars on a new harness but I see no other options????? So I believe this is the problem that is actually breaking the starters!!!

I cant see how or why the starter is still engaged but is it possible for slight corrosion on the flywheel to keep the starter from disengaging???

I just had the same problem for the most part. My kid just replaced the tranny. Since I was working he called me to tell me it was in but needed a new solenoid as he broke it when truck wouldn't start. (Bolt rusted on??) All he got was just a click nothing else. Jumping the solenoid could start it most of the time. So solenoid bad right!?! WRONG!!!

I replaced the solenoid. All I got was just a click then nothing. Could jump it from time to time. And it would start every once inawhile on it's own. So I crawled under it with test light. Had daughter turn key and could see power was getting to starter. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS GOOD! I took a hammer and started to tap starter to see if it was stuck. Well on doing so I could see a small spark from the bottom bolt. NICE!!! Pullled it out with wires still attached enough to ground nose cone. then had the key turned again. Sure enough worked fine. Took a wire brush to the sepeartion plate and bolted it back up. Turned the key and BAMMM works just fine. So as you see just a connection problem, or in thise case a ground problem.

You may want to look at the same thing. Sounds like it may be the same problem!!

Mine is doing the same thing. Ill turn it over and it clicks, but sometimes if i hold the ignition when im turning it over its a low rough start then it turns over. I do not have a multitester so i can check it that way. Any ideas? My dad says the battery terminals are garbage, as far as their style. He knows alot but it just sounds like something else. At one point i would turn it over at get nothing so I ground down the service area on the frame ground with an angle grinder than put new stainless washers and then it would just "click". I have a ground relocater but if i try this aswell, were should i put the new ground?

Those repair ends are only a temporary fix. Plan on replacing the entire cables soon.
