New Coil Packs ?
I have a 98 F150 with a 4.6 and its about time for new coil packs.
Its been about 50k since I last replaced them and was wondering, I can buy Accel coil packs for about $20 less a set than OEM, should I? And if I do buy the Accels, do I need to run a better wire, like Ford Racing 9mm? |
Coil packs should last a lot longer than 50k. Heck, plugs are good for 100k and wires might go 200k. The only way a coil pack is gonna crap out early is if you are in the habit of washing your engine and keep getting them wet, or you don't use dielectric grease in the boots when you pull the wires out of them.
|
Well, I do wash the engine regulary, and no way would I ever keep plugs in for 100k, or coolant or any fluid for that matter
Thats besides the point, if someone out there was going to replace there coil packs and had a choice of Accel or Motorcraft, and would save money on the Accels, which ones would you get? |
Not trying to argue, what you do is your business, but platinum spark plugs will go 100k.
I personally will use nothing but OEM Motorcraft ignition parts in my truck, regardless of expense. That's what I do - plugs, wires, and coil pack. I changed them all at 84k because I had an intermittent miss, and the only reason I changed the coil pack is because the new plugs and wires didn't fix it. |
Still going on stock plugs and cops......123K miles now.

Thanks for the replies, but thats not what I am asking.
My truck has 235k , all original, other than alternator, battery, plugs, wires, etc.. I always stick to factory, and am the type to replace things I know will go before they go, I attribute the high miles and great condition of my truck to that. I just want input of people who have the Accel coil packs, not Accel COPs, but the coil packs anyone? |
the way i see it is you got that many miles out of the original coils so why go with a different brand.
|
if you go with any aftermarket performance coil packs i'd go with msd. heres a link to napa's site with the msd.
http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...tion+Coil+(MSD) but i still think you should stay with oem. |
ive got 130k on my stock crown vic packs and it can still spin them off the line. you should be able to get 100k easily out of them.

If you have that mentality, then why are you on your original pistons? They'll go someday too! I'm just kidding with ya. But seriously, there's no reason to suspect them over any other component.... If you want to be paranoid, you should replace the fuel pump. It is mechanical and MUCH more prone to failure than coil packs. But I've seen new ones take a dump in 200 miles so.... There's a saying that I like.... Tried and true.... Well you coil packs have lasted 50,000 miles- That's purty good reliability. Who's to say they won't last a million? If you replace them, then you are putting an un-tested set in your truck. They might die driving out of the dealership!:) Don't think I'm making fun of ya, I'm not. I just want you to think about it. Maybe it'll save you a few hundred bux. |
chester, love that picture, my grandad has a 07 f250 5.4 and he hauls our bull dozer all the time and never has any troubles out of it!
|
chester, he has coil packs you have cop's. but i still agree, i dont think theres any need for replacing them.
|
He isn't getting his question answered. He's bound and determined to replace his coil packs (NOT COPS) and wants to know if Accels are any good.
I expressed an opinion - I'd only use OEM - but I can't vouch for or against Accels. How much can you get the Accels for? OEM's are 80 bucks a pop at rockauto.com. |
I would stick with MotorCraft.
I finally had one original coilpack go out at 131,000 on my 97 and only replaced the bad one. I chaged all 8 plugs also at 131, but the orginals still looked fine. If MotorCrafts can last that long, why go to anything else? |
