5.4 Build
5.4 Build
let me gather my peanuts before I make a call on this. . .
Heads- I hope so, I want to keep my ignition and avoid COP's
Accessory drive?- Alternator, AC, PS, ?
Starter?
Sensors?- What other sensors could it have than mine?
Tuning, will I have to update my tuning or get higher flowing injectors?
Anything else?
to the 5.4 itself. If I can use my heads, I want to just get a rebuildable shortblock. Assuming the engine was running when pulled, and no damage, could I re-use hard parts such at pistons, rods, and crank? Just get them cleaned up and such, ball hone cylinders and be on my way. Machine costs are what I'm trying to avoid here. Where do you get Ford parts such as rings and bearings? Are parts from the 4.6 and 5.4 interchangeable, such as pistons and rods? Not sure if the 5.4 gets its stroke from the crank or rods, but I think they are same exact bore.
I want to start gathering parts or prices to go ahead and do my own build. .
thanks

i wish i knew more, but i know you'll need a crankshaft, the forged version is preferred over the cast. the exhaust won't bolt up, you'll need some work done for it to bolt back up. unless you're going to swap the pcm, yes, you'll need custom tuning. do a search on it. JMC has some extensive notes on the swap.
Want to build an engine while my truck is still driveable, dont want to pull the 4six, have nothing to drive, and be stuck with building that.
Its like the 305 VS. 350 guys, you can build them at the same cost but make more power out of the 350

a 5.4 will out perform the 4.6 in so many applications its almost humiliating to even offer the 4.6
the 4.6, uh i think it only comes alive over the 5.4 at extremely high rpms.
my question is about your initial post, seemed too vague for my mind to comprehend...
what do you mean by heads? theyre basically the same heads, the intake manifold is different thats where your one difference up top is going to be. just keep ur coil packs and make a bracket for them if you have to.
accessories are exactly the same. just transfer them during the swap (dont open your AC line! let it hang with zipties.)
starter is same story as above.
sensors, you have one extra ECT sensor being a 98 4.6. drill an tap. you will also have to relocate a few harness plugs like IAC and probably TPS?
i would recommend looking for piston and ring combo's. dont have to worry about anything compromised then since the likelihood of a bad rod is slim if the motor has no damage just minor wear.
check out jegs/summit for clevite bearings.
i think there is a difference in rods... i know the crank is different tho. dont quote me lol

Yea, everything sounds good. I didnt know about the heads, but awesome, I get to keep my ignition.

the engine mounts, radiator, radiator hoses, heads, cams, exhaust manifolds, water pump, starter, oil pan, oil pump, throttle body elbow and throttle body will all interchange.
you'll need different block, intake manifold, crank and rods. Possibly the wiring harness lengthening in a couple spots.
5.4 and 4.6 have the same bore just different strokes.

heres an alternative site to order new parts from, i know jegs and summit are pretty good but you never know when you'll stumble across something you need and they dont offer.

they had everything i wanted to build the bottom end of my 5.4.

comp cams #102500 is what i would recommend in a N/A setup for excellent torque and bottom end power. built54 ran these on his n/a setup. if you are going blown, well you can certainly go with a more aggressive cam.
you'll also want the 5.4 torque converter as well, the 4.6 converter is set at a different stall speed.
