Check Engine P0119 Coolant Temp. Sensor

I have an '04 5.4 liter Lariat Screw with 28K miles. Yesterday, while waiting for my son to get out out schoo, the check engine light came on. I had been sitting with the engine idling for about 10 minutes with the A/C on. Got the code checked out this morning and it was P0119 and it read "The PCM has determined that the input from the engine coolant temperature sensor is intermittent". Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this and what was the fix. I'm leaning toward the sensor which I would assume is some type of thermocouple located near the thermostat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

well, you don't want to know where it is.. I had the same code about a month ago. The CHT sensor is in the valley of the motor under the intake manifold. If your looking at the motor from the front, it's on the rear passenger side. I went through everything diagnostic before changeing it. The haynes manual as well as the ford tech manuals say that to change it, you need to remove the intake manifold. If you have small hands and flexible wrists, you can get a 3/4 wrench around it and remove it. I was able to change mine that way. In the end, it turned out that my PCM was bad. Had to take it to the stealership for a new one. $790.88 later, I'm now dealing with other problems.

heres the link to my posts - I'd suggest reading it all

Thanks UCF. I have read in more than one place, that the sensor rarely goes bad and that it's usually something else. I removed the battery cables and reset the PCM and the code has not returned for over a week now. Hopefully the PCM sent a bad reading and caused it and now it's okay. The main culprit is usually the PCM. Thanks for the info.

This same code came on while I was driving, but my truck (08 F150 5.4L Triton 3v) didn't have any noticeable symptoms. It ran normal. But my question is, if the sensor is bad, would it affect the temperature gage on my dashboard? My gage acts normal, when the truck is cold, the gage shows that its cold and gradually warms up as the truck warms up. So I'm hoping its just a bad code.

In my experience, about 90% of the troubles like this turn out to be a bad connection at the sensor. But you still have to do the work to get to it. :-(

I had similar experience with 4.6 f150 and problem was slightly low coolant level. Reservoir level seemed ok but somehow radiator was low and had developed an air pocket that circulated.
