These are the installation instructions for the TPS on an 86 5.0L FI
I thought I did it right, but it idles at about 2K in Park or Neutral, and about 900 RPM in gear. Can someone please explain what the CAUTION part means?
1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the TPS.
2. Matchmark the sensor and throttle body for installation reference.
3. Remove the 2 retaining screws and remove the TPS.
4. Install the TPS so that the wiring harness is parallel with the venturi bores, then, rotate the TPS clockwise to align the scribe marks.
CAUTION
Slide the rotary tangs into position over the throttle shaft blade, then rotate the TPS CLOCKWISE ONLY to the installed position. FAILURE TO INSTALL THE TPS IN THIS MANNER WILL RESULT IN EXCESSIVE IDLE SPEEDS!
5. Tighten the retaining screws to 16 in. lb.
When correctly installed, the TPS wiring harness should be pointing directly at the air bypass valve.
6. Connect the wiring.

Didn't replace it, but actually should. I took it off to clean it, but also didn't mark it, not that it would have helped since it only goes on one way. On the older 5.0's, it caused numerous problems and I have all of those apparently. They just go bad. It is just a little plastic thing with two little "tangs" that spin with the throttle shaft blade and I'm assuming determines the throttle position with the sensor. I have excessive idle and I hope I got it right this last time.
Its been awhile since I did one but if I remember correctly it moves in those two screws up and down. It does not move much. You put it on and loosen it a a bit probe the 2 wires and move it until the ohm meter gives you the correct reading.
