Thinking of Buying 99 f150 w/5.4 triton, is it worth it, what problems to expect???

There is a 1999 ford f150 sport extended cab for sale in town. It has 82,000 miles on it and the guy said he has had no problems w/ it. It has the normal rust on the bumpers cause they are painted but that doesnt bother me. Im more worried about reliability. I hear alot of problems w this 5.4 engine and just wondering what people think. Is it ok or should i stay away from it. What should i look for. Also he said the abs light is on and has not worked for awhile. What could be the problem there? thanks for the help

That truck is barely broke in. If its maintained in the future and hasnt been abuse in the past it will last another 200k. My 99 has 110 k on it and it runs like a new truck. I also have a 97 E-350 van with a 5.4 and it has 210k on it and I cant believe how good it runs. The ABS deal is probably minor you would have to get a book and trouble shoot it.

Ask him about leaking head gaskets. The 99s had that problem. They were repaired under warranty but a few snuck past the fix. Mine leaks about a quart a week when I push it. (read sig) It doesn't burn the oil it leaks past the head gasket. All in all the 5.4 is a very stout engine and as was posted should last you a long while longer.

(1) Depends on the price !!
(2) If the price is decent, take it.

I have a 1998 w/ the 5.4, 4x4, ext cab, etc.
Awesome truck for what I paid.
Just take care of it, do the proper sceduled maitenance, and you will be very happy. I bought mine last Nov. and the previous owner didn't believe in maintaining it. I have put some parts and my labor into it, and it runs awesome. I don't know where your hearing or reading that the 1999 5.4's have alot of problem's, I do not think you will find alot of people on here complain to much.

Good luck w/ the purchase.
Oh Ye ! 82000 miles, that's nothing,
take care of it and you will see 200k+

abs light is probably a front speed sensor. and you can service it to see the history of it. trans flush, oil change, coolant flush, differential fluid change. just see what all the fluids look like and you can see how its been treated. but other than that it should last you a long time.

is the truck worth $5500?

I can get the truck for $5500. The only thing that i can see wrong w it is that it is the sport 4x4 model so the front and rear bumpers are kinda rusty and the factory nerf bars are rusty. The body seems fine but there is alot of small scratches and scuffs cause it is black and he never had it buffed. It has a nice cap on it that i should beable to get $300 bucks for so i would only have $5200 in th truck. The tires are about 50% left and like i said before there is something wrong w the abs and is causeing it not to work and the light to come on. what do you guys think, is it worth that?

depending on where you are from i would say that is a great price with low miles. My 2000 5.4 has 195k miles and is on its original motor, tranny, diffs, alternator, starter, fuel pump, pretty much everything except a couple brake jobs and axle seals. The first 160k miles were towing around a fifth wheel cattle trailor as well but was well maintained. depending on how well it was treated/maintained it will last a long long time.
