Better gas mileage

I don't know if this is the right place to post this and if not sorry. I've got a 2001 supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4 engine. I recently changed the coils and plugs. The truck has 136,000 miles on it. The new coils and plugs definately helped on the gas mileage since I had one bad coil. But my question is what are some things I can do to improve gas mileage even more. I'm on a limited budget so keep this in mind with your suggestions. Some of the things i've thought about are underdrives cold air intake and possible electric fans.

Thanks

I saw it suggested in another thread on here to just watch the tach and keep it below 2,000 RPM as much as possible when driving around town and accelerating. I think that has done more to improve my fuel mileage than anything else, I didn't realize how much I was using on acceleration until I started watching it. Easy to do, you just have to adjust your driving habits a bit.

Change out that fuel filter, cost all of about $10 and take 30 minutes. Get yourself a K&N replacement air filter.

Biggest fuel saver is.....yourself, so modify your driving habits, and costs nothing.
Use the cruise control.
Don't accelerate hard.
Remove Excess Weight.
Observe the Speed Limit .
Keep Tires Properly Inflated.

x2! i've gotten all kinds of work done to my truck for fuel mileage. new engine with a slightly bigger cam. dual exhaust and cai. and a performance chip. the thing is too fun to drive because all the power and the exhaust sounds so much better and its hard to take it easy on it .

Replacing bad parts to regain lost mpg's is always a good thing to do.... Buying 'new' stuff that is 'supposed' to increase the mpg's on an otherwise 'tuned up' engine won't really gain you that much, and it will take you a long time to recoup the price of that 'new' item in actual gas saved anyway... IMO, of course..

The best 'gas saving' thing you can do and is totally FREE and is in your head and your right foot!

As was mentioned above, if you can drive like a grandma and just keep your hwy speed down to 60 mph, then that will gain you a pretty good amount of mpg's..

When stuck in traffic, are you one that has to ride up on the *** of the car in front of you to keep others from cutting in? Or, do you leave a car length or two and coast as much as you can?

If you do the first thing, then you are on the gas and the brake all the time doing this... Your mpg's will drop like a stone.... If you simply let your foot off of the brake and allow the truck to start moving while it's idling and then adjust your speed accordingly and let off the gas again to coast back up to the car in front of you, then you will save a ton! Sure, someone will always cut in front of you if you leave more then a cars distance, but who cares?? Are you going to get to your destination any sooner by being one car length ahead??

I've been doing this for sometime now, and I've found that I save a bunch of mpg's on my daily commute to work. I drive a total of about 40 miles a day. Most of that is hwy, but in the evenings, I'm stuck in traffic every day! Inching along most of the way!

Doing this, my average mpg for the week is 15-16 mpgs. The best I have ever gotten with this truck on a straight hwy run doing 60 mph is 17-18 mpg!

I can get the thing down to as bad as 8-10 mpg towing my TT! I don't know what the mpg's are when I 'drive it like I stole it', because I've not done that long enough to check it....

Do what you want, buy what you want, but this is just what I'm doing and it's working for me...

Me too Mitch. I am big about "cruising" in traffic. I never understood the whole "launch and stop" deal to keep people from "cutting" on the freeway. You are completely right in that you are not getting anywhere any faster. I have learned to laugh all the way to the bank at the clowns darting in and out of traffic during rush hour. And as I am sure you are well aware, many of those clowns you end up driving right by as they lock the brakes up to avoid rear ending the person in front of them. I think for the most part that it is aggressive driving that kills your gas mileage. As for the mods, you are right again. You could easily spend a thousand dollars to gain an extra mile to the gallon, but as fuel costs continue to rise, recouping your investment isn't a reality. I know from experience that staying under 2000 rpm really makes a difference in fuel consumption. I still have the 3.08 so my acceleration pales in compare to most others but I figure where ever I am going will be there when I get there.

Yeah, and for the most part, they are the ones causing all the 'stop and go' issues in the first place!!

I find this scenario amusing, as it occurs at least once or twice a week with me, or I witness it happening to other "coasters"... Anyway, I'll be doing my coasting deal in traffic and easing up on the car in front of me so I don't have to hit the brakes, and then just letting the truck idle along again as traffic starts to move again... Well, I invariably get the clown that is on my *** trying to keep others from cutting in and also swerving from side to side to see ahead and he sees that I'm leaving a car or two space in front of me... OMG, you'd think I just smacked his grandmother or something... I see his arms flaying and his mouth moving, obviously upset with me, because I'm leaving 20 feet of distance that he obviously needs to make up time with...

Well, they always seem to find that moment when they change lanes and cut off the person in the other lane, so that they can pass me and then cut in front of me... I always clap my hands and congratulate him on such a brilliant move and getting 20 feet closer to his destination...

What's even funnier is they try it again, and move into the other lane, but then they get stuck there! Me, staying in my lane the whole time, usually end up passing them and then they get stuck behind me again!!! (well, I will sometimes close the gap a bit, just to keep them from cutting in again...)

That makes my whole day!!
