1986 5.0L EGR Questions

As I was cleaning everything up for re-installation, I noticed something that seems out of place.

EGR valve.

Where the EGR connects to the plenum/upper intake.

Where the EGR comes into the plenum. That explains what that hole is for that was completely clogged up with oil/carbon.

Question 1: Is one of those holes supposed to be plugged up like that, or did someone do that?

Question 2: Is the open hole on the plenum supposed to be siliconed (seems to be black RTV silicone) up like that, or is it supposed to be open? It looks like someone tried to plug it, but pressure popped a hole in it.

I really appreciate the help that I have received so far! Hopefully this is the last problem that I see/find!

Found a picture of a replacement EGR Valve and only the one hole is open, so I am assuming too that the hole in the plenum should not be plugged either.

yeah that is a back pressure fed egr set up so they saved money using the older casting. One side is blocked, the silicone could have come from using rtv somewhere else in the motor. Since the sensor seems to be missing, it may have been blocked on purpose. Probably best to put it back like it was unless you are going to make the whole system back like oem new. no way lol

I took the sensor off of the top. I have it, but am installing a new O-Ring from the Upper Intake Gasket set I got. I took an exacto knife and cut the silicone out. I'm sure that wasn't helping anything...

Thanks for the tip though!
