Hey guys...just bought an '02 F150 recently. Doing my first oil change and also installing a mag-hytec tranny pan and rear diff cover.
First of all which engine oil type do you recommend. Local car shop said 5w-20 but I keep reading posts about using 5w-30 or 10-30. My '02 with the 5.4 only has 26k on it, doesn't get driven very much, and I use it for towing on weekends. Which oil type do you recommend?
Second, is Mercon V the correct oil type for the tranny and is 75w-140 the correct oil type for the rear diff? I will be using Mobil 1 full syn for all the oils but wanted to get your thoughts on the oil types.
Also, does anyone by chance know the how much to torque to bolts on the tranny pan and rear diff?

If you are replacing the covers with Mag Hytec use the tourque specs they provide not Ford's. I have the diff cover but do not remember the specs.
5w20 is correct for your truck. 75w140 is correct for your diff.

5-20 or 5-30 will work fine in the motor. I use 5-30. You make that call. Only add 6 quarts of oil no more. You will find it only comes half way up between add and max. That is your full mark. Don't fill it up to the max mark.
Your rear diff requires friction modifier if you have a limited slip I believe, I am not sure if the mobil 1 has that in it already. I think Royal Purple does. Ford sells the friction modifier. I think you need 4 ounces. Someone here will know that for sure.
Your magtech covers should come with torque specs, use those like norm said. If they don't have the specs let me know and I can look them up in the shop manual. You should get one of those manuals as well. They come in very handy.

Call Lucas Oil or Royal Purple. Their tech support will guide you to the right products for your truck. By the way, you won't need the friction modifier since it is already in the bottle with Royal Purple and Lucas Oil.

I use Amsoil. I recommend using a tube of Ford's friction modifier or the Slip lock from Amsoil in your diff if it is limited slip. Even though Amsoil's gear oil claims to have it I still had some shudder until I added a little more.
Your factory trans pan gasket is reusable and from what I have read it is the best available for your truck, so save your money there and reuse it. I just wiped mine off good and put it back in, no leaks.
The only advantage to going with a thicker oil is for heat. If it is very hot where your at then some people use a thicker oil. Your motor has no miles on it so I personally would not go any higher than the 5-30. The reason I use the 5-30 over the 5-20 is it used to be what was recomended for these trucks when they first came out and another of my cars uses 5-30 so it is just easier to buy a case at a time and use it for two cars. Use a good oil filter with an anti-drain back valve. The factory motorcraft ones are supposed to be the best. I have a wix on mine but I think next change I will try the motorcraft.

FYI the Pan bolt torque is 11 lb/ft. The diff cover is 33 lb/ft. Depending on which tranny pan you get you may need a 4x4 filter to go along with your tranny pan. One of the Mag-Hytec pans is deeper and a 4x2 filter doesn't have a long enough pick-up to reach down in the pan. Personally I use 5W50 synthetic oil in the engine. Not necessary but it gives me peace of mind. In the rear diff I use Royal Purple 75W140 without any additional friction modifier.

The mag hytec trans pan has an o-ring so you will not need the gasket. It is torqued to 12-16ft lbs on the 4r70w tranny.

Yes, they do look nice, but, I've read where other members had trouble with the trans pans using the 4r70w on certain year supercrews. In particular, the 03s. Seems there's not enough room between the back of the pan and the crossmember above it. Just a word of caution for those interested. Verify with the company and here of fit for your year and model.
With regards to tans pans and diff covers, does anyone here have experience with the PML stuff? They look pretty good and are less expensive.
