93 octane is recommended for use of high performance tuners. you dont really need to use it but its better that you do because you could get a pinging noise from the engine. and like chieffx4 said all tuners come with an 87 octane option.

so if i install the performance setting (which calls for 93) but only use 87 octane, will it damage the engine? or just make the pinging noise? or is that one in the same?

i dont think it will hurt anything. but once it starts to ping, i know using higher octane fuel will take care of that. there have been a few cases like this.

What do you think that pinging noise is? That is the pistons rattling around inside the cylinders as they fire out of time, due to the wrong octane. That dings the walls as well as stresses the rods and the crankshaft. You would be slowly destroying the engine. You need to run the proper octane that the tune calls for, it's that simple.
