Missing and now dying, NO CEL, 2000 4.6l

Original owner
2000 F-150 4x4 4.6l 5 speed 124,000 miles

I drive about 60 miles a day in this thing and for like 3 weeks now my F150 has ran rough like it has a bad coil (I have had them go bad them in the past) Now it has taken to completely shutting off, complete power down, where it resets the clock, and you have to completely turn the ignition off to get it to start back up (nothing like locking the steering column on a truck doing 55 mph)

Am I right in thinking that if it hasn't thrown the CEL that it is something that is not monitored? I know sometimes it takes a while to throw a CEL but it has taken longer than it has ever taken to throw a CEL? In the past when it was running rough, maybe 3 days would pass and I'd get a CEL (O2 sensors, Bad coil)

Any Ideas? I hate to take it to the dealer, and can they even diagnose anything if the CEL isn't lit? I sure hope it is not the CPU.

Need help
