changed plugs, now runs rough when in gear

but not in neutral or park...

Did the plugs on my E350 V10 (what a job). gapped at .054, anti seize, dielectric grease, blew the holes out before plug removal. Used Motorcraft plugs - same as what was in there.

The engine runs rough - chugchug...chug...chug...chugchugchug.... when in gear, but in park or N, it is smooth as glass.

My wife informs me that it did NOT do that BEFORE I replaced the plugs.

when driving you can feel the roughness, and with hard accelleration it hesistates.

Any help would be appreciated.

At least one of your plugs does not have the COP securely attached or the COP has failed or perhaps, a plug is defective. You'll need to dig into the computer to see which cylinder(s) is (are) suspect.

You're getting a misfire.

Yeah, like we need the wife to tell us what we already know....

Hmmmm.

Actually, the info provided by my wife was very helpful. Didn't know if I caused it or if it was there before.

Now that you mention it, I snapped the clip on one of the connectors. Just the clip that retains the thingy on the COP. I did secure it but, but perhaps it is wiggling loose.

any ideas of how to replace the clip that comes off the wiring harness? or Secure it better?

Zip tie it. Did you move something out of the way to get to the plugs and leave a vacuum hose disconnected? Go over your work and double check your steps to see if anything was moved.

ya know,

I was thinking of a zip tie. I just couldn't see any way to anchor it between the COP and the connector.

2nd idea is to get some engine bay grade electrical tape and tape it up, maybe ontop of the zip tie.

3 zip ties. Place one around the barrel of the Coil loose enough so you can loop a zip tie in it. Place the second one around the connector loose enough so a zip tie can be looped in it. Plug in the connector and loop the third zip tie through the other two and tighten all three. Tighten the third zip tie last.

Awesome!

you definately get the prize for cleaverness!

Picked up some wire wrap electrical tape at Pep Boys. Got home and was told there is a CEL. Read the code - P0401 = missing or low egr flow. A HA says I - I remember fiddling with two hoses that are probably the EGR ***'y and one didn't want to go back on.

Off to the van for a look see.....

Thanks for that excellent workaround JMC.
