460 or stroker

I have a trouble child 460 F350 SC.

I've finally gotten it back together after 4 years and the darn thing just will not give up causing me fits.

I was never a big fan of speed density fuel injection but that is the way 460's are. But I am considering building a 427 stroker engine and dropping in the beast. junking the 460. I might be jumping the gun here but I am getting tired of it.

Problem. It will not run right beyond idle. Runs like you have the timing off or a few plug wires are on the incorrect plugs. It bucks and shakes like I've never seen. And after sitting for a week, it smokes like crazy for a while (although I do not think that is related).

So would a 427 stroker FI push this turd around enough. I will not be pulling many trailers, only occasionally a car trailer.

I had a 97 f350 w/460 and I had the same problem.I changed everything on it and couldn't get it too run right and a buddy of mine said maybe the computer was bad.I bought a new computer from autozone and never had another problem again. Not sure if the fuel injection system is that much different from yours and my old 97 but its worth a shot.I ended up taking the computer apart and it had some sand and dirt in it so I figured moisture from the 2 is what did it.It would Idle but if I gave it gas and tried to drive it ,it would chug and act like it was only firing on a couple cylinders. But if you did want to change motors,I would go 429 stroker or something but I don't think the 427 bellhousing is the same as the 429 460.I guess it depends what you really are after and how deep your pockets are.Do you plan on changing the whole drive train or just drop a motor in.If you have the money,I would drop a 12 valve cummins in there and mod it out, that would be super sweet.I know they make adapter kits for just about every tranny out there so it could be done.I like fuel injection 460's but they are a pain when they don't run right.

did you mean FE? the FE 331, 352, 360, 390, 410, 428 and 427 all use one style of bellhousing

the windsor style engines 289, 302, 351w use another

while the 385 series engines 429 and 460 use another one

I would add a stroker crank to the 460 like the 514 stroker kit witha good stroker cam then port and polish the heads and get a new computer and have it tuned

Carb the thing. I love the 514 in my old Galaxie. These trucks with the 460 are rare, myself I'd keep at it.

All good points.

Computer. Hmmmmm. This thing had sat up for about 3 years before I got it and it sat here for 1 while I put all the missing pieces back together. The EEC Relay was in real bad shape so I can think the computer might be bad too.
I am going to check fuel pressure in a bit. I really do not think that is the problem thought. And tell me about rare. Finding a tranny for this beast was a chore (since the one in the truck was MIA). Had to go with a 96 model and totally disasemble to change the output shaft in it.

I was talking about stroking a 351 to 427 and swap out the entire drivetrain.

And my pockets are much much shallower.

I still think it'd be cheaper to carb the engien and stroke the 460 to a 514 since it's allready in the truck

To throw a carb on this I couldn't drive it.

I'm in Houston, the smog police would nail me.

Shouldn't matter if she's tuned up right. Not that it has to be 650 hp's, but even still, mpg's will suck, smog might actually improve. Or, change to a newer style setup, I'm thinking it's like the 302's where in about 93 they went to MAF instead of that speed density chit. I'll bet a setup is hard to come by anyways.

Really.

I didn't know they had MAF on the 460's. I was told they stuck with the chit all the way to the end.

I will go find one tomorrow if I can. I know the tranny wiring will be different but I have become an expert on the wiring on this beast.

And the visual would not pass here. They picky.
